How long do you have to be default on student loans before ...

They take your tax refund? how long do you have to be default on loan payments before they take your tax refund for a single mom(sure that doesnt matter) what if I were to make payment arrangements will they still take the tax refund?

As soon as you are in default of your loans the government will take your federal tax refund. They also have the option to garnish your wages (up to 25% in many states). It doesn't matter if you're a single mom or not (you're right about that). have you already defaulted? If not, request a deferrence for financial hardship. You can defer federal student loans for up to 3 years for financial hardship (interest will continue accruing though ? so in three years you'll owe quite a bit more). Unless you qualify for income-based repayment (it depends on the amount you owe, the amount of your income, household size, etc) you cannot arrange a payment plan. You have to pay your minimum payment or you are in default and they will take your refund and garnish your wages. the government doesn't mess around?
