How Much Do Antivirus Rankings Matter to You?

How Much Do Antivirus Rankings Matter to You?German antivirus lab AV-Test recently tested several security suites. Most of them declined since a few months ago, particularly Microsoft Security Essentials, our favorite Windows antivirus app. We still love it, but the recent AV-Test makes us wonder: How much do these ratings matter to you?

Microsoft Security Essentials was half a point shy of passingthe AV-Test, due to problems detecting zero-day threats. Other recent tests by AV Comparatives were better, but still mixed. That said, Microsoft Security Essentials has never been the top ranker in these tests (usually the top spots are the paid security suites), but it's something worth pondering.

What do you think? Does it matter to you?

Myth Busting ? when things hit the fan | DebtConsolidation.com.au

This week I wanted to share with you some of the biggest misconceptions people have when it comes to dealing with financial difficulties. When the ?financial? going gets tough for you these tips may come in handy.

Myth One: If I don?t think about it then it?s not really happening.

This myth is pretty self-explanatory. I like to compare it to children who close their eyes and believe that you can?t see them. If you look at the situation that child is still standing there, and you can still see them.

If you are faced with any financial difficulty, the best thing to do is get all of your emotional ?stuff? out of the way, then sit down with a nice cup of tea (or coffee if you prefer) and face the facts. You need to think out what you are going to do about it.

For examples sake, let?s assume that you have lost your job. You need to sit down and think the following things through logically:

  1. Am I getting a pay out?
  2. If I am getting a pay out, how many weeks? wages will it be? [This gives you an indication of how long you can go before starting the next job]
  3. Do I have any savings that I can use as ?wages? to add more time to the ?I must find a job by? dead line?
  4. Are there any expenses I can cut back on until I am employed?

With the above facts sorted you can then relax a little, figure out how much time you have and get started on finding a new job.

Myth Two: It?s best to not tell anyone about my financial situation.

I suppose that this myth is a bit of a half truth. If you are a private person, and not too fond of every Tom, Dick and Harry knowing your financial situation, then yes I agree, I wouldn?t be announcing on Facebook that you are broke.

However, there are some people who you MUST let know when things have hit the fan. You must always tell the people who you owe money to that you cannot make payments. I know that this seems like a really scary thing to do, BUT rest assured it isn?t that bad.

I know several companies (think electricity, phone and gas) that you can phone to get an extension on your payments, you don?t even actually need to talk to someone. You can just press a button on your phone key pad, and it extends the payment date by a couple of weeks.

If you can?t make your mortgage payment, the best thing to do is phone the home loan company and explain your situation to them. They may be able to set you up on a hardship program, or give you a few extra weeks to make your repayment ? at no cost.

If you don?t call them, you will risk not only getting charged a dishonour fee, you may also find it affects your credit rating.

Until next time

Scientists build structures with tiny bricks of DNA

A video from Harvard's Wyss Institute explains how strands of DNA can be assembled into three-dimensional nanostructures like tiny Lego building blocks.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers at Harvard's Wyss Institute have coaxed single strands of DNA to fit together like Lego bricks and form scores of complex three-dimensional shapes, including a teeny-tiny space shuttle. The technique, described in this week's issue of the journal Science, adds a new dimension to molecular construction and should help open the way for nanoscale medical and electronic devices.

"This is a simple, versatile and robust method," the study's senior author, Peng Yin, said in a news release.

The method starts with synthetic strands of DNA that take in just 32 nucleotides, or molecular?bits of genetic code. These individual "bricks" are coded in a way that they fit together like Lego pegs and holes to form larger shapes of a specific design. A cube built up from 1,000 such bricks (10 by 10 by 10) measures just 25 nanometers in width. That's thousands of times smaller than the diameter of a single human hair.

The latest research builds upon work that the Wyss researchers detailed in May, which involved piecing together DNA strands to create two-dimensional tiles (including cute smiley faces). This time around, the strands were twisted in such a way that they could be interlocked, Lego-style. As any visitor to Legoland knows, such structures can get incredibly complex in the hands of a skilled builder.

Yin and his colleagues are still learning their building techniques. Fortunately, the bricks could be programmed to build themselves, with the aid of 3-D modeling software. Once the designs were set, the researchers synthesized strands with the right combinations of nucleotides ??adenosine, thymine, cytosine and guanine ? so that when they were mixed together in a solution, at least some of the bricks would form the desired design.

To demonstrate the method, 102 different 3-D shapes were created using a 1,000-brick template.

The Wyss researchers reported a wide variation in assembly success rate, or yield: Depending on the design, the yield ranged from 1 percent to 40 percent.?That's roughly in the same range as the success rate for another method for molecular assembly, known as DNA origami. The origami method requires more custom work to design the "staples" to hold the DNA structures together, while the Lego-style method can rely more easily on a standard toolbox of DNA bricks.

In the future, DNA origami and DNA brick-building may be used together, said Kurt Gothelf, director of the Center for DNA Nanotechnology at Aarhus University in Denmark. "It is likely that a combination of the two methods will pave the way for making even larger structures in higher yields," Gothelf wrote in a commentary for Science.

Researchers say complex nanostructures could be used as smart drug delivery devices inside the human body, or as the components for microscopic electronic or photonic devices. It may look as if scientists are just playing around with smiley faces and toy shuttles, but a few years from now, DNA bricks will be no laughing matter.

Update for 3:30 p.m. ET: Peng Yin put me in touch with the Wyss Institute's Yonggang Ke, the lead researcher for the study, for an email Q&A. Here's an edited transcript:

Cosmic Log: I'm trying to visualize the self-assembly process. The shapes are designed using software, and that yields a recipe list for different strands that are synthesized, and then the various ingredients are combined to assemble themselves into the desired shapes?

Ke:?"All the designs were done using software. First, a cubic '3-D canvas' model that contains 1,000 'voxels' was generated. [Each voxel represents an 8-base-pair connection between bricks.] Second, a list of a master collection of DNA strands (we ordered 4,455 strands) was generated based on the 3-D canvas. This master collection of strands covers all possibilities of shapes that can be designed from the 1,000-voxel 3-D canvas. Then we made 102 shapes using the software; each shape was designed by removing the unwanted voxels. At last, the software translates each shape to a recipe list of strands and sends the information to a robot for mixing the ingredients."

Q:?Do you have to select 'good' structures of Lego blocks from undesirable or misshapen Lego structures?

A:?"We didn't select the 'good' structures. That is why some structures' yields in the paper are so low. However, there are a few designed structures that failed self-assembly. They were mentioned in the supplementary material."

Q: I mentioned a couple of figures in the May report on your team's work with 2-D shapes: 12 to 17 percent yield, expected production of one desired shape per hour, $7,000 to synthesize a toolkit theoretically capable of producing 2 x 10^93 shapes. Do you have comparable figures for 3-D brick production?

A: "Yields of 3-D DNA-brick shapes were, on average, lower than 2-D DNA-brick shapes, but comparable to 3-D DNA origami structures. We saw yields varied from 1 percent to 40 percent, depending on the designs. The robot can make one 3-D shape per hour, which is similar to the pace for making 2-D shapes.? The master collection of 4,455 strands cost about $11,000, but we can produce 2^1000 (about 10^301) potential shapes. The much larger number of potential shapes is due to the higher resolution in our 3-D brick design." [The size of the voxels is smaller, with just 8 base pairs per voxel.]

Q:?Do you visualize combining the short-strand bricks into a completed structure, or building modular structures that are in turn built up into bigger structures (for example, that nanoscale space shuttle)? I assume this is where the combination of brick-building and origami might come in.

A:?"Combining multiple DNA-brick structures to form a larger structure via 'hierarchical assembly' is certainly on our mind. I think we will inevitably need to combine many different DNA assembly methods, including DNA brick and DNA origami."

Q: It sounds as if you expect bricks as well as origami to be used together for nanostructure synthesis. Is this a change from the way you expected the field to develop in earlier days, or did you always expect that the two approaches would end up being used in combination?

A: "The ultimate goal of the DNA-brick technique and DNA origami is the same: making larger, more complex, more stable DNA structures. The two methods are also intrinsically connected.

"I borrow a paragraph from our paper: 'DNA origami can also be related to the brick framework, in which half of the bricks are concatenated into a long scaffold. ... The successes of constructions that use only short strands (as in bricks) and those that include a long scaffold (as in origami) together suggest a full spectrum of motif possibilities with strands of diverse lengths: Longer strands may provide better structural support, and shorter ones may provide finer modularity and features; the eclectic use of both may lead to the most rapid progression toward greater complexity.'

"We certainly expect the two techniques will complement each other."

Q: Do you feel as if this establishes a sufficient toolkit for nanostructure building, or are there other steps or techniques that will still be required? Are you working on additional techniques?

??A:?"Far from sufficient. The DNA-brick technique is great, compared with a lot of existing methods. It is modular, simple, and can make many complex shapes that were not accessible before. However, it is still not quite enough for many reasons. First of all, the structures are still only nanometer-scale objects. It will be great if we can get them to micrometer or even millimeter sizes. Second, we need to increase the stability of structures for many applications. Third, we want to be able to transfer the structural information to a lot of other materials (e.g. metals, carbon, silicon, protein?) to achieve more functions."

Q: Any more insight into the mechanism that leads to self-assembly?

A: "Right now we don't have any new hypotheses. A more important task for now is to search a reliable assay for studying the assembly mechanism."

Q: Is there any way to put an estimated time frame on applications for DNA structure assembly, or describe the potential applications?

A:?"It is hard to predict a timetable. However, we believe we are really close to making high-profile real-world applications using DNA structures, considering the rapid growth of the field in recent years. Many papers have been published in the last couple of years, showing the potential for DNA structures in biophysical study, plasmonic devices, biosensoring, targeted delivery vehicle, etc.

Q: In May, we mentioned the potential for drug delivery or medical monitoring (for example, by nanomachines in the bloodstream). How does going from 2-D to 3-D change the outlook for applications? What are the big obstacles yet to be overcome?

A:?"For some applications, 2-D DNA structures would suffice. However, for applications like drug delivery, going 3-D makes all the difference. A delivery vehicle/machine has to be a 3-D object that contains protective shell, recognition sites, etc. Note that we are at early stage of developing nano medical devices using DNA structures. The biggest obstacles in the near future are perhaps how to increase the stability of DNA structures in complex biological environments and how to observe the behaviors of the DNA structures in vivo."?

Q: Anything to report on patenting these technologies or forming a venture to commercialize them?

A: "We have filed a provisional patent on the DNA-brick technique. We also have filed patents for other DNA techniques that we have invented in the past. We certainly expect that commercialization of these techniques will be a possibility in the future."

BBC drama 'The Hour' back to make the 1950s sexy

LONDON (AP) ? The media are under fire, celebrities are under the microscope. Welcome to Britain in 2012 ? or in the 1950s, the setting for the BBC drama "The Hour."

A newsroom drama/political thriller about the staff of a current affairs TV program, "The Hour" gained attention last year when it debuted for its resonant story lines and distinctive retro style. The latter aspect ? all mid-century modern interiors, sensuous silk dresses and slim suits ? prompted the show to be dubbed, inevitably, a British "Mad Men."

The second six-episode season ? in the middle of its run in Britain and starting Wednesday on BBC America ? stays focused on the tempestuous trio of battling producer Bel Rowley (Romola Garai), combative reporter Freddie Lyon (Ben Whishaw, tech-master Q in the Bond film "Skyfall") and smooth anchorman Hector Madden ("The Wire" alumnus Dominic West) as they confront meddling management, murky maneuvers in high places and tensions between work and their private lives.

They also must deal with the consequences of their show's rising profile ? especially the impulsive Hector, who finds that fame comes at a cost.

Series writer Abi Morgan, whose work includes screenplays for "The Iron Lady" and "Shame," said she was drawn to the period's sense of style ? "a certain kind of 'La Dolce Vita' glamour that I really love." She also wanted to explore the birth of modern culture in a decade often seen as staid and conformist.

"What we know about history is inherently, it repeats itself," said Morgan, counting off the show's modern themes: "Immigration, women trying to have it all, the sense of a kind of greater global threat (because of the Cold War) ... the rise of capitalism and consumerism in Britain, the birth of celebrity, and the vulnerability of celebrity."

"The Hour" has been hailed for recasting a time usually remembered in Britain as a gray era of postwar austerity. Prosperity took a long time to arrive in Britain, which emerged from World War II victorious but broke ? wartime food rationing continued until the 1950s.

But by 1957, when the second series of "The Hour" opens, wages were rising, the economy was growing, new consumer goods were available and the tempting devil of rock 'n' roll was washing up on Britain's shores.

The series introduces the BBC's brash rival ITV, which launched in 1955 as Britain's first commercial TV network, and takes excursions to seedy Soho nightclubs, where journalists and politicians mingled with denizens of the London underworld.

Garai, whose television roles include the title role in Jane Austen's "Emma" and an ambitious Victorian prostitute in "The Crimson Petal and the White," said "The Hour" helped correct "the idea that somehow the '60s was the sea-change."

"The '60s was born out of the '50s," she said. "In this series, we talk a bit about Ginsberg and Kerouac. The birth of everything we identify as 'modern' was definitely seeded in the '50s and the Beat Generation."

Like Aaron Sorkin's "The Newsroom," the show is also a love letter to journalism ? a much-needed one in Britain, where the profession's image has plunged after revelations of tabloid phone hacking, and where even the august BBC has been tarred by its bungled response to a sex abuse scandal.

"I still believe in the nobility of journalism," Morgan said. "I still love good journalism, and I wanted to hark back to an age when you didn't instantly tweet and you didn't instantly blog and you didn't videophone an event. The slow burn of building a story and nurturing a story and investigating a story is still fascinating to me."

"The Hour" continues a run of strong female characters for Morgan, who dared to depict the divisive former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."

In Bel, she has created something still too rare on television ? a sympathetic, competent woman in a position of power. Garai said it was a delight to play a strong women who is "not seen as being bossy or controlling."

Her only qualm is the show's luscious costumes, which have made Garai and her co-stars the subject of glossy magazine spreads about '50s fashion.

The real-life Bel, she says, would have worn "a tweed suit and brogues."

"You sort of think, could Bel really afford a silk two-piece on a BBC producer's salary?" Garai said. "And then everyone goes, 'Oh shut up, Romola.' So I say 'OK, OK, yes. I'll wear the beautiful suits. And breathe in.'"

Former baseball union head Miller dead at 95

Published: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 12:49 p.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at 12:49 p.m.

Miller, the union boss who won free agency for baseball players in 1975, ushering in an era of multimillion-dollar contracts and athletes who switch teams at the drop of a batting helmet, died Tuesday at 95. He had been diagnosed with liver cancer in August.

?I think he?s the most important baseball figure of the last 50 years,? former baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent said. ?He changed not just the sport but the business of the sport permanently, and he truly emancipated the baseball player ? and in the process all professional athletes. Prior to his time, they had few rights. At the moment, they control the games.?

In his 16 1/2 years as executive director of the Major League Players Association, starting in 1966, Miller fought owners on many fronts, not only achieving free agency but making the word ?strike? stand for something other than a pitched ball.

Over the years, his influence on the game was widely acknowledged if not always honored. Baseball fans argue over whether he made the game fairer or more nakedly mercenary, and the Hall of Fame repeatedly rejected him in what was attributed to lingering resentment among team owners.

Players attending the union?s annual executive board meeting in New York said their professional lives are Miller?s legacy.

?Anyone who?s ever played modern professional sports owes a debt of gratitude to Marvin Miller,? Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chris Capuano said. ?He empowered us as players. He gave us ownership of the game we play. Anyone who steps on a field in any sport, they have a voice because of him.?

Major League Baseball?s revenue has grown from $50 million in 1967 to $7.5 billion this year. At his last public speaking engagement, a discussion at New York University School of Law in April marking the 40th anniversary of the first baseball strike, Miller said free agency and resulting fan interest contributed to the increase. And both management and labor benefited, he said.

?I never before saw such a win-win situation in my life, where everybody involved in Major League Baseball, both sides of the equation, still continue to set records in terms of revenue and profits and salaries and benefits,? Miller said. He called it ?an amazing story.?

Miller, who retired in 1982, led the first walkout in the game?s history 10 years earlier, a fight over pension benefits. On April 5, 1972, signs posted at major league parks simply said: ?No Game Today.? The strike, which lasted 13 days, was followed by a walkout during spring training in 1976 and a midseason job action that darkened the stadiums for seven weeks in 1981.

Miller led players through three strikes and two lockouts, and baseball has had eight work stoppages in all.

Slightly built and silver-haired with a thick, dark mustache, Miller operated with an eloquence and a soft-spoken manner that belied his toughness. He clashed repeatedly with Commissioner Bowie Kuhn.

Before Miller took over the union, some players actually opposed his appointment as successor to Milwaukee Judge Robert Cannon, who had counseled them on a part-time but unpaid basis.

?Some of the player representatives were leery about picking a union man,? Hall of Fame pitcher and former U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning said in 1974. ?But he was very articulate ... not the cigar-chewing type some of the guys expected.?

Miller recalled that owners ?passed the word that if I were selected, goon squads would take over the game. They suggested racketeers and gangsters would swallow baseball. The players expected a ?dese, dem and dose? guy. The best thing I had going for me was owner propaganda.?

He was elected by the players by a vote of 489-136. Baseball had entered a new era, one in which its owners would have to bargain with a union professional.

When he took over, the union consisted of a $5,400 kitty and a battered file cabinet, and baseball?s minimum salary was $6,000. By 1968, Miller had negotiated baseball?s first collective bargaining agreement. By 1970, players obtained the right to take disputes before an arbitrator.

Nowadays, baseball?s biggest stars make up to $32 million a season, the average salary is more than $3 million and the major league minimum is $480,000. While the NFL, NBA and NHL have salary caps, baseball does not.

Miller?s biggest legacy ? free agency ? represented one of the most significant off-the-field changes in the game?s history. The reserve clause that had been in place since 1878 bound a player to the team holding his contract. Miller viewed it as little more than 20th-century slavery.

?Before Marvin, there were no such things as the negotiations. It was take it or leave it,? Hall of Famer Joe Morgan said. ?What was your recourse, to quit?? Acting with union backing, outfielder Curt Flood finally challenged the reserve clause when he refused to report to his new team when he was traded in 1969 from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Philadelphia Phillies. Three years later, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the reserve clause by a 5-3 vote, keeping intact baseball?s antitrust exemption.

In 1975, however, the union found a new test case, when pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally refused to re-sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Montreal Expos, respectively. Arbitrator Peter Seitz sided with the players.

The owners went to court, saying the reserve system was not subject to arbitration. Two months later, U.S. District Judge John Watkins Oliver upheld Seitz, and a federal appeals court did the same.

In 1976, management and labor agreed to a contract that allowed players with six years of major league service to become free agents and sell their services to any team willing to pay. In a 1982 letter to the editor published by -->The New York Times, Seitz called Miller ?the Moses who had led Baseball?s Children of Israel out of the land of bondage.?

?Marvin possessed a combination of integrity, intelligence, eloquence, courage and grace that is simply unmatched in my experience,? said Donald Fehr, a successor to Miller as union head. ?Without question, Marvin had more positive influence on Major League Baseball than any other person in the last half of the 20th century.?

Yet baseball?s Hall of Fame refused to vote him in, despite five appearances on the ballot.

?I and the union of players have received far more support, publicity and appreciation from countless fans, former players, writers, scholars, experts in labor management relations, than if the Hall had not embarked on its futile and fraudulent attempt to rewrite history,? Miller said after falling one vote shy in 2010. ?It is an amusing anomaly that the Hall of Fame has made me famous by keeping me out.?

Miller?s next opportunity for election is December 2013.

Former Commissioner Peter Ueberroth said Miller should be inducted ?without question.?

?He changed the game of baseball,? Ueberroth said. ?He was very tough, but he was very fair in the end.?

Miller was born in New York, the son of a salesman in the heavily unionized garment district. He was born with a withered right arm, which didn?t prevent him from playing tennis into his 90s. His mother was a schoolteacher. He studied economics at Miami University in Ohio and New York University.

He entered the labor field in 1950 as an associate director of research for the United Steelworkers Union. In 1960, he was promoted to assistant to union president David McDonald. When McDonald lost a hotly contested election, Miller began looking for a new job.

Miller remained current on baseball events right up until his death, never hesitating to criticize owners for collusion and the union for agreeing to drug testing.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan; son, Peter; and a grandson. His wife, Terry, died in 2009. Susan Miller said her father wanted his body donated to science. She said the family had not decided whether to hold a service.

Rice continues to lose ground with skeptical senators

ABC News' Sunlen Miller and Rosalyn Oshmyansky report:

Day two of Susan Rice's charm offensive on Capitol Hill brought little support for the U.N. ambassador to become the next secretary of state if nominated by President Obama.

After meeting privately with Rice this morning, moderate Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said she still had questions about the embassy attack in Libya that "remain troubling" and needed to be answered before she can support Rice for secretary of state.

"I continue to be troubled by the fact that the U.N. ambassador decided to play what was essentially a political role at the height of a contentious presidential election campaign by agreeing to go on the Sunday shows to present the administration's position," Collins said after her meeting with Rice. "I would need to have additional information before I could support her nomination."

By way of comparison, Collins jumped at the opportunity when asked about Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., whose name is also on the short list said to be considered for the next secretary of state.

"I think John Kerry would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues," Collins said.

As for Rice, Collins brought up the 1998 bombing of the two U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Kenya when Rice was the assistant secretary for African Affairs. The senator said it's troubling that lessons seemed to be missed because so much of what happened in Benghazi "eerily echoes" what happened in the African attacks when Rice was head of the African region for the State Department.

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

"In both cases, the ambassador begged for additional security," Collins said, "and those requests, as in the case of Benghazi, were turned down by the State Department."

Collins said today she asked Rice what role she played in turning down requested security at the two embassies in Africa before the 1998 bombings.

"She [Rice] said she would have to refresh her memory but that she was not involved directly in turning down the requests," Collins said, adding, "but, surely, given her position as assistant secretary for African affairs, she had to be aware of the general threat assessment and of the ambassadors repeated request for more security."

Rice has spent the past two days in meetings on Capitol Hill, specifically requested by her with individual senators who have voiced concern about her potential promotion to secretary of state.

After the morning meeting with Collins, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., had a private meeting with Rice but declined to say afterward whether he would support Rice if the president nominates her. Corker stressed that he hopes Obama will choose someone with independence.

"I would ask the president back step away from all the buzz around this particular situation and take a deep breath and decide who is the best secretary of state for our country," Corker said this afternoon. "Hopefully, it will be someone who shows independence and have the ability to lead this nation and the world."

The senator's careful response stands in direct comparison to comments he made Tuesday in an interview with Foreign Policy magazine in which he said Rice would make a better Democratic National Committee chairwoman than secretary of state, based on what happened in Benghazi and its aftermath.

Corker was more restrained today, saying he'll withhold judgment until someone is nominated and he's able to thoroughly examine that person's credentials in order to make his own determination.

Corker is next in line to the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee so will have a prominent role in the nomination process. He said today that he holds the secretary of state at a higher standard than most cabinet members.

"All of us here hold the secretary of state to a very different standard than most cabinet members," Corker said. "Secretary of state is, no doubt, one of those we want someone of independence. We understand they are going to support the administration and all of their efforts, [but] we want someone who's transparent and direct."

Rice Tuesday met with a vocal and tough crowd of Republican senators: Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. The three senators said they were more troubled after their meeting with Rice.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, the independent from Connecticut, so far has been the one lone senator to have met with Rice this week and come away with a positive view.

After his meeting Tuesday, Lieberman said he has his questions answered and does not see anything that would disqualify Rice from potentially becoming the next secretary of state, if nominated.

Woods made it clear Tuesday that he had no interest in taking up membership on the European Tour. He had floated the possibility last month in Turkey that he would look into dual membership with Europe counting the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup toward the minimum requirement of 13 events.

"I'll make it real simple ? I'm not going to play the European Tour next year," Woods said.

Woods is starting next season at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. Throw in the four majors and four World Golf Championships, and he would need only three more events to become a European Tour member.

"It's a bit much for me still," Woods said, adding that his focus is squarely on the record 18 majors won by Nicklaus.

Donald last year became the first player to win the money title on the PGA Tour and European Tour in the same season. McIlroy matched that feat this year, even though three of his five wins were regular PGA Tour events.

On the strength of majors and WGC events, which are every bit part of the European Tour schedule as the PGA Tour schedule, Woods could have won both money title at least four times in the last decade if he had been a European Tour member and added a couple of events. Europe used to require only 11 events to be a member.

"Certainly, I've had opportunities over the years, especially when it was at 11 events," Woods said. "I was very close a couple times and could have taken membership up and played it. But still ... I enjoy playing around the world, and I still always will. But I am going to play this tour."

When asked why he never bothered becoming a dual member, Woods said, "It wasn't important to me."

"I think I could have won it a few times," he said of the money titles. "I don't know what that number was. But it just wasn't important to me. My main concern was winning major championships, and I've won 14 of them, and I'm very proud of that."

Asked whether adding a few European events would have detracted from his preparation for the majors, Woods nodded.

He remains stuck on 14 majors, winning his last one in 2008 in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. Woods has failed to win the last 14 majors he has played, the longest drought of his career. Next year's rotation of majors include Merion for the U.S. Open, a course he has never seen, and Oak Hill for the PGA Championship, the only time Woods has played all four rounds at a PGA without breaking par.

Woods said winning a major makes it a great year, which in his mind means that four players had a great year ? Bubba Watson (Masters), Webb Simpson (U.S. Open), Ernie Els (British Open) and McIlroy (PGA Championship).

"That's something I haven't done since '08, so it's something I can do next year," he said. "I've won golf tournaments; I've had some really nice years, some really good years in there. But as I said, winning a major championship just takes it to a whole new level."

That doesn't make his year a total loss.

Woods played his most complete season since 2009, and the World Challenge that starts Thursday at Sherwood Country Club will be his 24th week of competition, which includes the Ryder Cup and an exhibition in Turkey.

The only stumble was at Doral, where he withdrew in the middle of the final round when his Achilles tendon flared up on him. He won in his next start, at Bay Hill, and then added wins at the Memorial and AT&T National.

"I've very excited because last year at this point in time I was still not quite where I wanted to be physically," he said. "I ended up having a little bit of a problem at Doral at the beginning of the year, but did the prudent thing in not playing at the end. This year has been fantastic in that regard. I've felt good. I've played a full schedule for the first time in a very long time, and just very pleased with what I've done overall with my game."

How to Keep Your Aquarium Clean | Pets Care

There is something special about an aquarium in a room. The colours, the gentle play of light on the fish as they gently swim to and fro between the plants, and the soothing tone as the water is refreshed. It really is an ideal addition to any home or office. But to keep an aquarium looking its best does require a degree of care. As living creatures, the fish need to be in a clean and healthy environment in order to thrive, and the confined world of the aquarium can soon become toxic if not properly maintained. Keeping a healthy aquarium isn?t difficult, however, if you keep up a regular routine of checking and cleaning.

Here are the simple steps you can take that will keep your tank healthy and safe and looking its best for everyone to enjoy. Remember that the tank is a self-contained eco system that imitates the natural environment of rivers and lagoons that the fish come from. It actually needs algae, bacteria and living matter to maintain a natural habitat, so you are not trying to scrub everything to a gleaming shine. The aim is to keep the water and glass clean and clear so that you can see the fish at their best, but leave the right amount of natural elements. It?s not just the fish that are alive in there.

Change the Water Regularly.

Your fish breath it, poo in it and live in it. Water is the medium in which their whole lives take place, and as such should receive most of your care. The task isn?t as daunting as it sounds, however. The water doesn?t have to be completely clean, and in fact the fish actually require a certain level of bacteria and impurities to thrive. What they can?t tolerate is too much of the impurities. The filter removes most of the larger debris and feces from the water as it draws the water through (more on filters below) but you should also change around 20% of the water every week. It?s the equivalent of opening a window to get a blow of fresh air through the house, and will refresh the tank with clean, oxygenated water. Avoid taking more than this though, as when you take out the old water you?re also removing the healthy, and necessary, bacteria. Removing water also stresses the fish, so keeping the change to a smaller amount reduces the disruption. The replacement water should also be treated for chlorine before adding to the tank, as normal tap water is toxic to fish. Every few weeks you will need to do a full water change to give the tank a periodic clean, when you do this you should transfer the fish to a bucket or another tank that has some of the ?dirty? water from the tank. This preserves a portion of the bacteria that the fish need, and both the fish and this water should be added back to the newly cleaned tank so that the fresh water has a starting dose of all the right ingredients.

Clean the Gravel

It?s the tip at the bottom of the garden as far as the fish are concerned, and everything unpleasant ends up down there. It?s the repository for all the uneaten food and poo, and if left to build up, can become toxic. Filters will remove a large proportion of the particles that are in the tank, but larger pieces will become lodged in the gravel. Cleaning the gravel should also be done every two weeks using a wet vacuum or syphon. This will remove the worst of the particles and keep the debris to a minimum. When you do the occasional full water change you can rinse the gravel in a bucket or sieve to give it a thorough clean. Avoid scrubbing the gravel, however, as you don?t want to remove all the bacteria that will be coating its surface.

Clean the Filters

There are various types of filter available, so the best advice here is follow the manufacturer?s instructions for cleaning. Deciding on how often to clean them varies depending on the size of the filters and the amount of water in the tank. Suffice to say that the same principle applies as for the water and gravel. The filters, whether they?re sponge or a synthetic material, are a home for the healthy bacteria. The aim is to rinse them enough to wash out the old food and waste that will have been trapped there, but not do such a thorough job that they?re ?clinically? clean.

Control Algae

Algae isn?t a problem for the fish. It?s all part of the natural world for them. The problem is that once it takes hold it will grow over every surface in the tank, including the glass that you want to look through. Trying to watch the fish through a layer of green slime ruins the effect, and it also changes the aquarium from an attractive feature to an eyesore.

There are three ways to deal with algae. The first is to scrape it off manually. There are various cleaners available to help with this but it comes down to a bit of hard work. Depending on how you do it, cleaning the algae can distress the fish and it may be best to remove the fish while you do it. The second is to use a chemical additive that controls the algae. Whilst safe for most types of fish, the chemicals also kill some of the good bacteria in the tank, so opinion is divided on the benefit of this approach. The final approach is to add a Plecostomus. This is a bottom feeding fish that loves to eat algae, and it will spend its days grazing happily on the gravel and glass slurping up all the greenery it can find, making it the most natural of cleaners. It?s just a question of whether the algae are breeding faster than the fish can eat it.

Algae is the bane of most aquarium owners, and it can take a period of trial and error to figure out the best way to keep on top of it without harming the fish in the tank or spending an excessive amount of time dealing with it. Most find that a combination of keeping one or more Plecostomus and a certain amount of time manually scrubbing the glass works best.

Just a final note on manually cleaning the glass ? when you do this the algae will float away in to the water. The filter should then draw most of this in, but a certain amount will settle back in to the gravel. To avoid this happening, scrape the algae off just before you do your routine gravel cleaning. Cleaning the gravel will then also pick up most of the free-floating algae.

Keeping your tank healthy for the fish and making sure it?s as attractive as possible to view go hand in hand. A healthy tank is also an attractive tank, a clean and bright window looking in on a lush and natural environment with gorgeous fish swimming happily. Every time you sit and look at such an aquarium you realise all the cleaning and maintenance work is worthwhile.

Pirelli unveils covered-up calendar for 2013

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? After taking it all off for 39 straight years, the notoriously racy Pirelli calendar has buttoned up, delivering a 2013 edition Tuesday ? in flamboyant Rio de Janeiro of all places ? with nary a nude in sight.

Still, with a cast including Brazilian top models Isabeli Fontana and Adriana Lima posing in lush locations around Rio, the calendar is still steamy despite all those clothes. Clad in short shorts or slip-dresses, the models gaze out from between verdant palm fronds at the Botanical Garden, strike catlike poses in hillside slums, or shoot come-hither gazes from the somber depths of decadent samba nightclubs.

This demure, covered-up twist on the iconically saucy calendar was the brainchild of American photojournalist and war photographer Steve McCurry, who said he accepted Pirelli's offer to take on the coveted assignment on the condition he could do it his way.

"I was surprised because I don't shoot much fashion," McCurry told journalists at a news conference at Rio's stately old Copacabana Palace hotel. "But I do know about beautiful women.

"I thought 'why don't we find models who aren't only gorgeous and beautiful but are also doing good things,'" said McCurry, who is best known for his photo of an Afghan refugee with piercing green eyes that appeared on the cover of National Geographic Magazine in 1984.

The team selected socially committed beauties including Petra Nemcova, the Czech model who founded the Happy Hearts Fund in the wake of the 2004 tsunami to help children hit by natural disasters, American environmental crusader Summer Rayne Oakes and Brazilian actress and child rights advocate Sonia Braga. McCurry suggested that shooting the 11 women fully clothed allows the viewer to see them as fully formed people, with ideas and initiatives and projects, as opposed to straight-out sex objects.

Kyleigh Kuhn, an American model who has long supported efforts to build playgrounds and schools in Afghanistan, praised the new, socially conscious Pirelli calendar.

"This is where the rubber meets the road for peace," she said, referring to the end goal of her work in Afghanistan. "It's going to have a trickle-down effect for all our charities."

Still, it remains to be seen whether the calendar will remain as socially aware ? not to mention as fully dressed ? next year. Executives at the Italian tire maker said it would depend on the direction the photographer who's selected next year wants to take the project.

Launched in 1964, the calendar was born as a racy way to promote the brand's tires. With its naked pinups shot in exotic locations from Mallorca to Tunisia to the Bahamas, the calendar quickly took on bigger proportions, becoming a fashion icon that attracted top-tier photographers including Herb Ritts, Richard Avadon, Annie Liebovitz, Mario Testino, Terry Richardson and Karl Lagerfeld.

The 2013 edition marked the third time it's been shot in Brazil, following the 2005 and 2010 editions.

Preparation for the Great Critical Incident: First Aid Emergency ...

By J.W. Caesar

Hosea 4: 6 (KJV) My people perish from a lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is power for survival when it comes to overcoming disasters. It is vital to get educated on how to survive in the event of a myriad disaster scenerios. Many people die or get injured because they did not adequately plan, prepare or mitigate for unseen emergencies. In order to win the war on disasters; American citizens must take disaster preparation seriously and strengthen themselves mentally, spiritually, and physically to overcome the challenges in the future.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency states on their website that there are actions that should be taken before, during, and after an event that are unique to each hazard. Each person or group should identify the hazards that have happened or could happen in their area and plan for the unique actions for each hazard. They further note that mitigation can be defined as actions to reduce loss of life and property by decreasing the impact of disasters.? What this means is??taking action now??before the next disaster?to reduce human and financial consequences later (analyzing risk, reducing risk, insuring against risk).? Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without these actions, people jeopardize their safety, financial security, and self-reliance and quality of life.

Building an emergency kit with first aid equipment and taking medical classes are best practices in mitigation that can assist in reducing risk and loss to families and the community.? It is important to analyze what type of hazards would affect the community during a disaster, as well the decision to shelter in place or evacuate to a safe location.? By following this risk analysis process, it would help clarify what type and size of container or bag to place first aid items inside, the quantity, what too and what not to pack, where to pack it, the environment, hazard scenario and number of people it can provide care too. Your first aid kit or emergency supplies should be designed around an all hazards approach that insures against the risk of not being able to treat or prevent hazards from overtaking you and your group. These hazards can cause temporary or permanent damage to the critical infrastructure of this nation. Therefore everyone should be a stakeholder in public safety and security of this nation. As a result, many are designing their first aid kits around temporary disaster events where there is a short recovery period, while others are preparing their kits for a total collapse of the system where medical resources will be hard to find.

Caution: for medical legal and health safety reasons-Disaster Preparers should think about:

  1. Preparing physically, mentally, and spiritually now to adapt to changes caused by impact of disasters and?continuity of civil and infastructure recovery.
  2. Familiarizing with their local, state and federal laws on the boundaries of giving care to humans, pets and livestock.
  3. Getting prior training on how to use the items in the first aid kit.
  4. Working as a trained and covenant group, not loner.
  5. Trying to get written certification or medical authority to perform certain procedures.
  6. Not going beyond their scope of practice or their medical certifications.
  7. Abiding by the local laws of what is allowed in your first aid or medical kit.
  8. (Personal, Force, Asset?Protection)Avoiding making themselves a target for thieves, murderers, drug addicts that use false emergency scenes or requests for help.

A first aid kit can be purchased at many stores, disaster preparedness organizations and online merchants. Medical supplies can also be purchased individually to build your own kit.? Some have also combined the two as one mitigation measure. Others have crafted their own replacement first aid products by improvising. They use tampons for bleeding, card board for splints, and other homemade items, or pet supplies for their kit?s inventory. The real issue is finding the right items and kit skin for your needs. There are many questionable claims to first kits such as the number of people that it can actually treat in an emergency, the quality, sterility and durability of items, the protective covering of the container or bag and excessive prices for minimal supplies. This is why it is vital to do a risk analysis and make appropriate mitigation decisions for your own needs from an all hazards approach.

Medical Supplies and their Skins

Medical supplies for a first aid kit can be put inside of a various items that are all weather resistant, waterproof, durable, floatable, not previously had any toxic or corrosive materials stored inside of it, and clearly marked as a first aid or medical kit. Ziploc bags and plastic trash bags can give extra all weather protection and longetivity of items. The kit should also be easy to carry with straps or handles, have reasonable space or compartments for medical items, and easy to open or secure during an emergency. The size and type of first aid emergency kit may be based on varied factors such as the personal needs of the individual, group, or community, different hazards, ?medical training, number of sick and injured, terrain, response time, life cycle of disaster, use with vehicles, walking distance, evacuation, and weather.

Examples:

  • Military Unfolding zippered Aid Bag M-3 & M-17
  • Military Chest with handles
  • Military Aid Station chest containers
  • Military hard plastic or metal containers
  • Nylon, Leather or Canvas Back Packs
  • Luggage with wheels and handle
  • Purse or designer bag
  • Lunch box
  • Square or rectangle storage containers
  • Tupperware containers
  • Plastic Ice Cream or used Food Containers
  • Hunting vests
  • Belt Pouches

A well-stocked and well maintained list of items in the first aid kit should be kept up to date at all times by rotating and replacing items.? A best practice for maintaining the mitigation investment of life saving equipment is doing inventory and preventative maintenance checks before and after using the kit. It can take place on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly cycle. ?The outside and inside of the emergency kit should be inspected for damage such as cracks, tears or holes. Mitigations measures such as health safety inspections for spoilage and expiration dates of items are important also.? However, some questions have been raised about keeping items regardless of expiration dates because of future scarcity of items during extreme disaster periods. These questions should be addressed by medical authorities who are expert in disasters and laws of the land. ?In any case, some items can lose their shelf life, sterility, durability, and may become toxic because of the hot storage temperatures. Another temperature issue is freezing. ?Solutions can freeze causing the containers to crack and break causing contamination of other items or damaging the first aid container.

The kit should work as expected: treat injuries and save life when you need it and cause no harm when it is not needed. It is vital to verify that the items consisting within the kit still function as expected, including the batteries in the medical equipment. The first aid kit should be stored in a place that is of the right temperature for medical supplies, in a safe location, away from pests, where no damage can occur, can be accessible to adults, but not to children or pets that can be poisoned and injured.

In summary, disasters can happen at anytime and anyplace. The consequences of not preparing for them may be immeasurable. To minimize this risk, it is vital to mitigate these impacts by building an emergency first aid kit based on analyzing, reducing, and insuring against future risks. It would be wise to assemble an emergency first aid kit that is adaptable and maintainable for your needs, take first aid classes, get familiarized with medical ? legal laws, learn how to take protective measures in emergency situations, and establish mutual-aid and covenant partnerships well in advance of an emergency situation. All of these steps help reduce the impact of hazards associated with future events and improve the chances of winning the war over disasters.? Americans, must remember that everyone is a stakeholder in public safety, God given freedoms, continuity of civil government,?and protecting the critical infastructure and key resources of this nation.

Clinton, Egypt's foreign minister discuss political crisis, Gaza

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr on Monday to underscore U.S. hopes that Egypt's political crisis can be resolved in a democratic manner, the State Department said.

Clinton reiterated U.S. concerns about Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's decision to assume sweeping powers and checked in on the progress of discussions between Mursi and senior judges on the way forward, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told a news briefing.

"The secretary underscored the importance of settling these disputes in a democratic manner, so we look forward to seeing the outcome of that (discussion)," Nuland said.

"We want to see the constitutional process move forward in a way that does not overly concentrate power in one set of hands," Nuland said.

She said Clinton also used the phone call to follow up on Gaza, where Egypt brokered a truce after a week of fighting between Israel and the Palestinians.

If you?re already using Facebook, you can make sure you don?t post anything that you wouldn?t want Facebook to use or delete it (and make sure anyone who has shared it has also deleted it).

Facebook copyright and privacy concerns have long been a contentious subject; indeed, every time Facebook touches one of its policies, you can bet that a notice similar to the one posted above will begin floating around Facebook thereafter. But the next time you see one of these kinds of statuses all over your news feed, please do your Facebook friends a favor and check it out before posting.

And if you?re one of the people spreading these things, please proofread. The ?Berner Convention? may have happened on some fiery stovetop somewhere, but the Berne Convention deals with the protection of literary and artistic works.

Happy Facebooking!

Debt Collection Laws in Alaska

The State of Alaska follows the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act as enforced by the FTC. They also came up with state laws that can further protect consumers under their authority.

Based on Chapter 1, Article 3 (Sections 210 and 220) of the Alaska Administrative Code, the state laws forbid the subsequent debt collection practices:

Debt collectors are forbidden from calling your workplace unless the company and the debtor allows it.
A collector is forbidden from getting in touch with friends, employers (former and present), co-workers, neighbors, and other family members and talk about a debtor?s financial obligations. They are only permitted to do so to get advice on how to contact the debtor and they should correctly and truthfully introduce themselves.
Unless a property has been used for security, the collector has no legal claims over a debtor?s property and should not threaten to repossess it.
If the debtor is represented by a lawyer, the collector should quit communicating with them and deal with the representative instead.
Any type of misrepresentation of the collector?s identity is strictly forbidden (e.g. lawyer, government officer). The same holds true for the details of the debt like the sum.
The collector should not falsely tell the debtor of the rights to file a response or dispute to their demands. They are also forbidden from deceiving the debtor to signing any confession of judgement.
The collector is prohibited from adding any fees and costs on top of the debt originally owed by the debtor.
In addition to these provisions, the law in Alaska also says in sections 45.50.471 ? 561 that unfair trade practices and any violation can be sued in the state courts. If the courts rule in favor of the debtor, they can receive 3 times more than the true financial damages incurred by the untowardly actions of the collector. It is either that or $500, depending on which amount is higher. On top of this, you will also be paid for any legal costs and attorney fees spent on the legal action.

Statute of Limitations in Alaska

Alaska also has a list of statute of limitations (SOL) that protect debtors from old debts that were not acted upon by either the creditor or the collector representing them. Once the debts age long enough to surpass the statute of limitations, both the creditor and collector cannot go after the debtor or file a legal action against them.

The time limit for debts in Alaska is six (6) years for oral and written contracts. For promissory notes and open-ended accounts, the limitation is just up to three (3) years. The SOL countdown begins from the day the debtor defaults payment. This does not mean the count begins on your last payment but the date after you have not paid. For instance, if your payment is every 1st of the month and your last payment was on 2/1/2012, the SOL will begin on 3/2/2012. If this is a written contract, you will not be covered by the SOL until

3/3/2018. What Happens When the Debt Goes to Court

If a creditor or collector goes to court as a last resort to get the debtor to pay their debts, one of the first things to check is the statute of limitations. You need to present evidence of the age of the account. This can be in the form of the cardholder agreement and the letter from the collector with the name of the original creditor, the quantity of the debt and the date you stopped payments.

Should your debt be uncovered by the SOL, the state laws of Alaska enable the debtor to get the professional services of a debt settlement business. They can represent the debtor to help them reduce the outstanding balance of the debt to an amount that is satisfactory to both debtor and creditor.

However, if the creditor or the debtor cannot reach an understanding, they might be compelled to go to court. As the debtor, you can present in court evidence of your limited financial situation. The Alaska Courts will require at least 3 months of bank statements to show the debtors claim if being financially unable to pursue paying the debts. If the court rules a debtor as being ?judgement proof?, this means any opinion against them will be rendered useless to the creditor since there is nothing of value that can be taken as compensation for the debt.

When the court finds the debtor completely responsible for the debt, the creditor will be given judgement. They will be permitted to gather valuable assets and properties that belong to the debtor as payment for the debt owed. However, there are limits to what they are permitted to gather.

Here is a list of assets and properties that are exempted from being collected:

$54,000 equity of a house property (whether separately or co-owned)
$2,800 worth of personal things that the debtor needs to make a living (e.g. publications, gear, etc)

Alaska is also one of the states implementing the community property law. However, couples have the option to sign up for it or not. The community property law means any property or asset incurred after marriage is co-owned by the couple. If one of them declares bankruptcy, properties and assets possessed by the couple can be taken by creditors/collectors.
