Google Maps 8-Bit for NES

HAHAHAhahaha! That's just great. If this turns out real i will have to hunt for a NES system. I only have a N64 as the oldest that's still in one piece.

The whole blowing thing might have been a built in logic that everyone had if they had this. Blowing still works for the N64 game (Pokemon Snap) that didn't work right away lol. If only it would work on Disk Based games!

The Five Important Characteristics of Effective Negotiators | Red ...

Have you actually asked yourself precisely what is really a world class negotiator?

What are the crucial traits that helped to discover the negotiation good results of well-known arbitrators like Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi?

The outcomes of study executed by Business Negotiation Options Minimal during the last 4 years reveal that world class arbitrators ought to be capable of cope with 5 regions core to negotiated good results.
chlopy
1. An affection & comprehension of the ?Big Picture? as well as the power to plumb the detail.

Probably the most vital sign of world class arbitrators could be the power to recognize precisely what everyone on the negotiation want. The ability to see at night ?demands? of the counterparties and extremely comprehension why it is because they are negotiating along is the central component that will assist you to be aware of what mutual understanding is present among events.

Equally critical is always to understand all the individual factors that will ensure the adoption and implementation of an deal by every one of the events. The true secret tool to use to aid an awareness of both the main issue along with the helping detail is the employment of asking.

2. The ability to create innovative alternatives.

What many people would want to call business negotiation is frequently only 1 sizing negotiating about cost. Our studies suggest that 50% of arbitrators find it difficult to create or discover alternatives beyond this dimensions. The ability to consider wonderfully isn?t a thing that arrives naturally to all of us but fortunately there are several methods available to aid us in generating innovative alternatives like the Disney Creativity Style or Signifiant Bono?s Six to eight Contemplating Less difficult.

3. Dealing with other individuals with dignity & regard all the time ? taking up the ?high meaningful ground?.

A frequent belief is the fact that for being a difficult negotiator you have to certainly be a rude or obnoxious negotiator. The two Mahatma Gandhi & Nelson Mandela are glowing types of the way to occupy the meaningful substantial floor. One particular can often be difficult around the troubles even though treating individuals associated with dignity all the time.

The principle of reciprocity claims we will go back to other individuals are behaviour exhibited toward us. It really is folly to think we can operate roughshod over other without turning to methods to claim back their dignity. Keep in mind that frequently sufferers turn out to be aggressors.

4. Investing time to organized prep.

The good results of the talks will be based mainly on the caliber of your prep. We very often make the oversight of thinking that we don?t have enough time to devote to get yourself ready for talks. Our research indicates the primary factor in eliminating misunderstandings & shortening the negotiation period ? consequently helping you save time ? is the caliber of your prep.

You will most definitely profit considerably from a upfront investment in planning ? attempt to commit at least as much time get yourself ready for talks as you expect you?ll engage in true negotiation ? if at all possible commit around 3 x more hours in planning as you expect you?ll engage in true negotiation.

5. Fully understand your individual negotiation strengths & weak spots.

Continuously build the. Not unlike world class entertainers in professional sports activity, world class arbitrators commit considerable time comprehending the way that they work out ? specially under time limits.

It is only after you have built an awareness of your family weak spots & strengths that one could apply actions to further improve your negotiated outcomes. Top class arbitrators never ever end improving their expertise because they realize that one can never ever reach efficiency. The world within which we work out these days may seem to be far more complex as opposed to mainly monocultural and closed organizations of yesteryear.

Times adjust and so carry out the crucial expertise necessary to become world class negotiator. If you?re able to complete little else but devote time to the above mentioned 5 crucial traits you will likely improve the caliber of your negotiated outcomes.

As Chester Karrass utilized to say,Inchin operation you do not get everything you should have, you will get everything you work out.Inch

The Data Center Journal A World Without Moore's Law

Moore?s Law has defied predictions of its imminent demise for decades now, and it seems to still be going strong. Most technology observers would admit that eventually Moore?s Law must come to an end (at least in terms of current silicon manufacturing technology) eventually, and some theoretical work has even attempted to prove an ultimate limit on computing power regardless of the technology (?Computers Faster Only for 75 More Years?). So what would happen if technological progress in computing grinds to a halt? Would there be anything left to live for?

The Limits of Physics

Few consumers or company workers can remember a time when computer technology wasn?t changing quickly. A computer bought just two or three years previously would be outdated, and keeping pace with current software generally required an upgrade of some kind?or a complete replacement. Much of this technology growth is the result of Moore?s Law (okay, technically Moore?s Law just describes it): roughly stated, computing power for a given cost doubles approximately every two years. So, eventually computer technology will reach sci-fi proportions, right? Well, maybe not.

For semiconductor (silicon) manufacturing, the limits of computer technology may already be in sight (?Single-Atom Transistor: Good or Bad News for Moore?s Law??). Eventually, the size of transistors bumps up against the size of atoms: imagine trying to build a microscopic castle out of normal-size Lego blocks and you have some idea of the problem. Many scientists and engineers have pinned their hopes on quantum computing for an extension of Moore?s Law. In its current state, quantum computing offers some hope, but it must overcome numerous technological hurdles?including feasibility for mass manufacturing and broad use?to compete with silicon technology. Yes, some government-funded lab somewhere might develop a quantum computer that blows traditional semiconductor-based computers out of the water, but if it doesn?t offer performance per watt per dollar similar to (or, preferably, better than) a typical Intel-based desktop, it doesn?t have any bearing on Moore?s Law.

You may well be thinking something along the lines of, ?Well, how many times have we heard that technological progress will stop, only to see it keep on moving ahead?? True, indeed. But just because all the previous predictions were wrong doesn?t mean the latest ones are as well. Even if we were to grant that computing power could potentially scale to infinity, other factors also pose limitations.

Other Limitations

Few people alive today were around when automobiles were introduced. But imagine you witnessed the amazing move from horse-drawn carriages to self-powered machine vehicles. You might have even thought that the next step would be flying cars (which are now the butt of jokes in the comments section of many an article discussing the limits of technology). Flying cars don?t seem to be beyond our technological capability, but they pose numerous practical problems, such as the greater danger of a part failure, much greater cost and infrastructure challenges (where?s the left lane and where?s the right?).

In particle physics, the quest for greater insight into the underlying stuff that constitutes the physical world requires ever more powerful accelerators?equipment that must invariably be funded not through private research or donations, but through taxes (the only revenue source capable of supporting these projects). But as profligate government spending leads to broken economies, inflation, or a combination of both, citizens will start to wonder whether their inability to buy food is really worth hearing yet again how discovery of the Higgs boson is just a few years away.

So, what do these situations mean for computing? Simply this: physical limitations are not the only consideration. At some point, economic limitations may also prohibit further development. Development of a new process technology for semiconductor manufacturing involves years of research and billions of dollars of infrastructure and other investment?all before the first products begin rolling off the assembly line.

Now consider that if you own a desktop computer that?s two or three years old, you probably can?t get something that?s really all that much better now?sure, a new machine may offer some benefits, but chances are (unless you?re an extreme gamer) you wouldn?t even begin to tap into those upgraded capabilities. For most consumers and even most company employees, web browsing, productivity software (Microsoft Office, Adobe products and so on) and solitaire are what really counts?and the computers of a few years ago can still handle those tasks just fine.

The question then is whether the market can sustain Moore?s Law. Cloud computing offers some impetus, as the centralization of computing resources into billion-dollar data centers means there?s still an appetite for more, smaller and less power-hungry computer technology. Computer technology markets for end-users (either consumers or businesses) seem to largely be dividing into mobile and cloud segments?that is, mobile devices and infrastructure (servers and such). The performance of desktop computers just doesn?t have the appeal it once did.

What Would a Future Without Moore?s Law Look Like?

Even if, say, 4nm process technology (or pick your favorite number?and even add a third dimension if you like, a la Intel?s FinFET technology) is the best that silicon manufacturing can do, that doesn?t mean that innovation comes to an end. It does mean that one of the main sources of faster, smaller and lower-power silicon will have dried up, however. The focus would then be forced toward better use of existing tools rather than simply use of better tools. Some good things might even come out of it: developers of bloatware would be forced to make better (i.e., less buggy and more efficient) products, not just larger ones.

Of course, the computer technology industry would also undergo some serious changes. Perhaps AMD would even stand more of a fighting chance against Intel, since it has for so long had to make the best of its situation despite a process technology lag behind its dominating competitor. This industry would likely begin to resemble the automobile industry: fewer real innovations and more focus on repackaging of the same technology, albeit with some small upgrades in this or that area.

Intel CEO Paul Otellini said, ?The world needs Moore?s Law to continue and Intel is committed to make this happen? (?Warning: Moore?s Law ends in two generations?). Likely, the world will do fine if Moore?s Law fails?it will simply have to make some adjustments. In fact, one might even argue that after about a century of unbelievable technological progress, the world is due for a pause that forces it to consider what it all means. Is the multi-billion-dollar computer and electronic infrastructure industry ultimately really just about delivering more videos to people anywhere and anytime (and in high definition)? A little philosophical introspection can?t hurt, especially coming out of a century or so of the most barbaric wars (aided by technology, computer and otherwise) history has ever witnessed.

Conclusions

The end of Moore?s Law seems to be a moving target, so making a firm prediction is a pointless venture. Don?t be surprised when that end arrives, however, as it probably will sometime in the next 10 to 20 years. (But then, it might take even longer.) Whatever the time frame, the end of Moore?s Law doesn?t mean the world has nothing left to live for. It may even turn out that the end of Moore?s Law is really just a pause, or new developments simply require more time and effort. Either way, companies will no doubt have plenty of room to optimize existing technologies and focus on better software. Moore?s Law could potentially end as the result of having reached a physical limit, but economic or other limitations could just as likely be the stumbling block that trips it up.

Have Refis Run Out? | Denver Real Estate Blogger

ecb17 refinance sign Have Refis Run Out?

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage is up about a half a percentage point since the middle of February, when they hit a record low. Mortgage refinances, however, dropped 24 percent in the same period of time.

That?s a huge reaction to a small move from a record low.

?Rates have been there (3.75 percent) for so long that most everybody who could benefit from lower rates has applied,? says mortgage analyst Mark Hanson. ?Now, when rates pop up over 4 percent, it chokes off refi activity, which is sad. 5 percent rates in the U.S. are now prohibitively high.?

Again, a little perspective here. Mortgage rates, spurred by government intervention in the market, of course, are still incredibly low. The problem is that the refinance business has changed fundamentally. This from analyst Barry Eisbruck:

?There used to be a product called cash out refinancing. Those quarterly refinancing numbers are amazing from 2003 vs. 2011. In 2003 you had 4.3T of total mortgage volume, 3T in cash out/refinancing and 1.3T in purchase origination. In 2011 it was around 1.3T of total mortgage volume, 75-80 percent of that was refinancing, so probably around 300-400B of purchase origination. These numbers are happening with record low rates and home prices at 1Q2003 levels.?

Here?s another strange point: In the fourth quarter of 2011, mortgages were cheaper than they?ve ever been, and yet refinancing was lower than the previous year, when rates were much higher. It all leads to the question: have refis run out?

?The decline in the Refinance Index this week was driven largely by a 12.0 percent drop in government refinance activity, while conventional refinance applications fell by less, decreasing 3.4 percent from the previous week,? according to today?s mortgage applications report from the Mortgage Bankers Association.

That?s a problem, because government mortgages (largely FHA) are going to get even more expensive on April 1, when the FHA raises insurance premiums.

There will still be some refis going through the government?s HARP2 program, which allows borrowers who have Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans to refinance, even if they owe more on their mortgages than their homes are currently worth (?underwater?). Those borrowers have been priced out of the refi market until now, but the program has just kicked into gear, so that could provide a boost.

For others, though, the return on a refi is getting ever smaller as rates go higher. Why do we care about refis? Because they put extra money in consumers? pockets?money they generally spend, fueling the greater economy.

New ancestor grasped at walking

Foot fossils unveil a species that lived near Lucy?s kind

Web edition : 2:28 pm

An ancient member of the human evolutionary family has put what?s left of a weird, gorillalike foot forward to show that upright walking evolved along different paths in East Africa.

A 3.4 million-year-old partial fossil foot unearthed in Ethiopia comes from a previously unknown hominid species that deftly climbed trees but walked clumsily, say anthropologist Yohannes Haile-Selassie of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and his colleagues. Their report appears in the March 29 Nature.

To the scientists? surprise, this creature lived at the same time and in the same region as Australopithecus afarensis, a hominid species best known for a partial skeleton dubbed Lucy. Another recent fossil discovery in Ethiopia suggests that Lucy?s kind walked much as people do today (SN: 7/17/10, p. 5).

?For the first time, we have evidence of another hominid lineage that lived at the same time as Lucy,? says anthropologist and study coauthor Bruce Latimer of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. ?This new find has a grasping big toe and no arch, suggesting [the species] couldn?t walk great distances and spent a lot of time in the trees.?

Lucy?s flat-footed compatriot adds to limited evidence that some hominids retained feet designed for adept tree climbing several million years after the origin of an upright gait, writes Harvard University anthropologist Daniel Lieberman in a comment published in the same issue of Nature.

Armed with only eight toe bones, Haile-Selassie?s team doesn?t have enough skeletal evidence to assign a species name to the new find. But this mysterious hominid?s foot shares more in common with 4.4 million-year-old Ardipithecus ramidus, largely known from a partial skeleton nicknamed Ardi (SN: 1/16/10, p. 22), than with Lucy?s crowd.

Ardipithecus evolved into an initial Australopithecus species by 4.1 million years ago, paving the way for Lucy and her kin (SN: 4/15/06, p. 227). Haile-Selassie?s discovery may come from a hardy Ardipithecus lineage that managed to survive near A. afarensis for hundreds of thousands of years before dying out, comments anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio.

As in gorillas, Ardi and the newly discovered hominid possessed short, curving big toes capable of grasping against the second toe. Other toe bones from Ardi and the new discovery formed joints that enabled a two-legged stride.

The newly found fossils include an unusually long bone from the fourth toe that unexpectedly resembles corresponding toe bones of monkeys. No such fourth-toe bones have been found for Ardi?s and Lucy?s species.

An Ardipithecus species might have lived alongside A. afarensis in East Africa, but the evolutionary identity of the new foot fossils can?t be determined, remarks anthropologist Tim White of the University of California, Berkeley, who led excavations and analyses of Ardi?s remains.

?Haile-Selassie?s discovery highlights our lack of knowledge about hominid feet,? White says.

How Long Does It Take To Resolve A Personal Injury Claim | Hertz ...

How Long Does It Take To Resolve A Personal Injury Claim? How long it takes to resolve a claim depends on several factors. There is a lot involved in personal injury claims. How were you injured? How badly were you hurt? The first question you can answer yourself. The second question is up to a doctor to determine.

First you must recover?.

Once the claim has been settled, it is over forever. For that reason, a good personal injury attorney will wait until you have completely recovered or reached maximum medical improvement. All the facts are needed to get you a fair settlement amount. How has your injury impacted future earnings? How much work time did you lose recovering? Can there be future complications attributed to this injury? What medical expenses can you expect in the future? How drastically has your injury impacted your life, now and in the future? In order to seek compensation for these items and more, hard numbers are needed.

What is maximum medical improvement?

Maximum medical improvement, also known as medical end, is the point at which all possible treatment options for your injury have been exhausted. Simply put, at this point there is nothing more that can be done to assist with full recovery. There may never be a full recovery.

Your lawyer can then demand?

Your doctor should be able to provide you with a rough estimate of how long it will take you to reach maximum medical improvement. When you reach that point, your lawyer can explain to you in more detail what you are entitled to receive. At this point, all medical and other supporting documentation must be gathered together to support your claim. Your lawyer will send these documents to the insurance company as part of a demand. The demand will include how much compensation is being sought, as well as reasons why it should be approved. Your attorney may stipulate a requirement of 15 or 30 days for the insurance company to respond.

The insurance company responds?

The insurance company handling your claim knows what legal rights it has. There can be questions of liability. There can be issues of what the insurance covers. If there is a possible way for the insurance company to legally not pay you, it may attempt it. This is the point where your personal injury attorney becomes invaluable. The attorneys at Hertz Law have tremendous experience dealing with insurance companies.

Finally ? the settlement.

How long does it take to resolve a personal injury claim? As long as it takes for you to exhaust all possible medical treatments related to your injury, plus the time it takes the lawyers and insurance company to negotiate the settlement. This negotiation can last a few days, a few weeks, or even years if several points are contested and require mediation. Each and every case is different. Call Hertz Law to discuss your case. You will receive free and honest feedback from a highly experienced legal professional.

Personal injury claims may seem to take forever to resolve, but in the hands of a skilled and competent attorney, such as one at Hertz Law, a fair settlement can be obtained relatively quickly.

Celebrity hacker pleads guilty in L.A. court

Reed Saxon / AP

Christopher Chaney, seen here in 2011, has pleaded guilty for hacking into celebrity personal accounts.

?

By Reuters

A 35-year-old Florida man pleaded guilty on Monday to hacking into the email accounts of movie stars Scarlett Johansson, Mila Kunis and Christina Aguilera, and sending nude photos and other information to celebrity websites.

Christopher Chaney of Jacksonville, Florida pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court to unauthorized computer access, wiretapping and other felony charges contained in a criminal indictment.

He was ordered held in custody and faces up to 60 years in prison, plus fines and restitution of about $2.5 million when sentenced in July.

Chaney, who admitted hacking the emails of more than 50 celebrities, was arrested in October 2011 after an 11-month investigation named "Operation Hackerazzi" by the FBI.

Other victims included former Disney Channel star Vanessa Hudgens and Renee Olstead, one of the stars of ABC Family's "The Secret Life of the American Teenager." Other victims were identified only by their initials, including J.A., B.P., and L.B.

Chaney, a clerical worker, told a Florida TV station shortly after his arrest that he had become addicted to prying into the affairs of movie stars and did not know how to stop.

His snooping resulted in nude photos of "Iron Man 2" star Johansson and a bubblebath picture of "Black Swan" actress Kunis reaching gossip websites.

Johansson said later that the photos of herself topless and wrapped in a towel with an exposed backside were taken for her then-husband, actor Ryan Reynolds.

Chaney admitted that he had emailed many of the photographs and other personal information that he stole from celebrities to another hacker and to two entertainment websites.

"Today's guilty pleas shine a bright light on the dark underworld of computer hacking," said United States Attorney Andr? Birotte Jr, whose office prosecuted the case.

"This case demonstrates that everyone, even public figures, should take precautions to shield their personal information from the hackers that inhabit that dark underworld," Birotte said in a statement.

Chaney admitted on Monday that he managed to hack into the personal emails of his targets by clicking on the 'forgot password' feature of their accounts and replying correctly to security questions by using publicly available information about celebrities that he found on the Internet.

Once in control of the email accounts, he obtained private photos, business contracts, scripts, and other documents. He went through contacts lists to find other victims and sometimes posed as friends to request more private photos.

Chaney initially had pleaded not guilty and had been free on bail. But on Monday he was ordered to be held behind bars until he is sentenced on July 23.

Short-term bridging loans for private or commercial usage by ...

For countless years people have been utilizing bridging loans as a short- term finance solution when money is needed swiftly but only for a short period of time. This has been as a rule for bridging a hole in resources during the purchase of a brand new residence and the sale of an existing property when completion of the sale and purchase can?t be set up for the same exact day. A new bridging loan can offer you the money required to complete the purchase ahead of the sale of the present property has completed. Later on, when the sale of the old property has completed the bridging loan would be repaid.

For businesses, if money is required for a limited period of time, commercial finance can frequently be the most suitable option as setup costs and early repayment charges might be cheaper than long-term finance alternative. When applying for commercial bridging loans it is vital to take into account that a commercial bridging loan should solely be used as a short-term means of borrowing. It is because they typically have a substantial rate of regular monthly interest and are therefore a very costly long-term option. On top of that the commercial bridging lenders will need their money back at the conclusion of the agreed timeframe, and being unable to do so will incur more expenses and maybe bring about the losing of the property.

Even so bridging loans can be chosen for a lot of reasons and since the credit crunch there has been an increase in the quantity of bridging finance loans being taken out when other types of lending has appreciably decreased.

For upgrading and extending, property finance may be raised by the use of bridging finance. Having said that an even more convenient and more affordable method tends to be development loans, which can additionally be taken for renovation and extension plans. Typically development loans are used for new build developments, which can be developing a new individual house or for large scale housing and business-related developments. The advantages of development loans are that it can be specifically created to deliver the money that is needed for property development and could be released in stages as it is called for. Interest only and roll up possibilities are available in the market and development loan solutions normally have financial loan periods of 3 years.

Bridging finance can be organized quickly because they have flexible lending conditions. The bridging finance companies factor in the value of the property or properties which are being given as security, plus the way by which their loan will be paid back. This adaptive lending criteria means that less processing needs to be done which saves time. Also, it is this versatility that has to some extent brought about the increased lending for bridging finance, seeing that more men and women consider bridging loans as an alternative to the banking institutions who?ve got much more significant restrictions.

Learning best when you rest: Sleeping after processing new info most effective, new study shows

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Nodding off in class may not be such a bad idea after all. New research from the University of Notre Dame shows that going to sleep shortly after learning new material is most beneficial for recall,

Titled "Memory for Semantically Related and Unrelated Declarative Information: The Benefit of Sleep, the Cost of Wake," the study was published March 22 in PLOS One.

Notre Dame Psychologist Jessica Payne and colleagues studied 207 students who habitually slept for at least six hours per night. Participants were randomly assigned to study declarative, semantically related or unrelated word pairs at 9:00 a.m. or 9:00 p.m., and returned for testing 30 minutes, 12 hours or 24 hours later. Declarative memory refers to the ability to consciously remember facts and events, and can be broken down into episodic memory (memory for events) and semantic memory (memory for facts about the world). People routinely use both types of memory every day ? recalling where we parked today or learning how a colleague prefers to be addressed.

At the 12-hour retest, memory overall was superior following a night of sleep compared to a day of wakefulness. However, this performance difference was a result of a pronounced deterioration in memory for unrelated word pairs; there was no sleep-wake difference for related word pairs. At the 24-hour retest, with all subjects having received both a full night of sleep and a full day of wakefulness, subjects' memories were superior when sleep occurred shortly after learning, rather than following a full day of wakefulness.

"Our study confirms that sleeping directly after learning something new is beneficial for memory. What's novel about this study is that we tried to shine light on sleep's influence on both types of declarative memory by studying semantically unrelated and related word pairs," Payne says.

"Since we found that sleeping soon after learning benefited both types of memory, this means that it would be a good thing to rehearse any information you need to remember just prior to going to bed. In some sense, you may be 'telling' the sleeping brain what to consolidate."

'When you can take the pebble from my hand ...'

Welcome back to BracketRacket, your one-stop shopping for all things NCAA on tournament game days. Read fast. Football season is just five short months away.

They dress alike, they walk alike, at times they even talk alike and yes, each has on occasion lost his mind. That's no coincidence. But doing justice to the relationship between Billy Donovan and Rick Pitino requires time and space we just don't have.

It goes back 25 years to tiny Providence College, where Donovan was a fearless 3-point shooter nicknamed "Billy The Kid" and Pitino was a ferociously ambitious young coach. Then they were practically father and son as assistant and coach at mighty Kentucky through the mid-1990s. Now they're the friendliest of rivals at Florida and Louisville, respectively.

Just like at the 1-minute mark of that clip, we're at that juncture in their relationship where the wise old master (Pitino) opens his palm a second time with the prize still in sight, then tells his student (Donovan), "When you can take the pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to go."

It could happen tonight.

Pitino is 6-0 in previous head-to-head matchups, but trails 1-2 in national titles. They're dead-even when measured by the respect of their peers. By midnight, only one of them will be headed back to the Final Four.

CELEBRITY ALUMS ? FAMILY DIVISION

Speaking of sitcoms, we now join "At Home with the Sindelars" in progress.

There's dad Joey, a former PGA Tour and current Champions Tour pro who was a three-time All-American, NCAA champion and athlete of the year at Ohio State, where he's also a member of the school's Hall of Fame. Then there's son Jamison, who's on the Buckeyes golf team now. And here comes mom, Suzanne, who like the rest of us is wondering why her house always resembles a shrine at this time of year ? to Syracuse. AP sportswriter John Kekis investigates ahead of the Buckeyes-Orangemen regional semifinal tonight.

"He cheers for Ohio State," Suzanne told him, "but it's not like Syracuse."

And what's that like?

"He's a sicko," she said. "He's completely sicko. ... "Nobody can call him or talk to him during a Syracuse game. I'll tell you how sick he is: We go to the game in Syracuse and he has to make sure we tape it, and then he watches it again when we get home."

It's even worse when Sindelar is playing golf on the road.

"At tournaments, I've had people come up, going, 'Syracuse is up seven at the half.' And I'm going, 'No! Don't tell me! I've got it recorded,' he recalled. " It really is an addiction for me."

You think?

Being raised in upstate New York set the hook. Living two hours southwest from campus ensures a steady supply. But what really turned Sindelar orange for life was a golf match in the mid-1970s, when he teamed up with then-high school rival and future pro Mike Hulbert and crushed a young Syracuse basketball assistant and golf coach named Jim Boeheim and his partner in a best-ball tournament in Ithaca. Not long after that beating by Hulbert and Sindelar, Boeheim dropped the golf duties and became head basketball coach.

Worked out well for all three of them. No word yet on their fourth.

BRACKET BUSTER

Year after year, either because they're teams were already out of the tournament or never got in, Boeheim and John Chaney, who coached Temple back in the day, would sit in the stands at games and wonder what they were doing wrong. When he wasn't courtside covering a game himself, AP college basketball writer Jim O'Connell would go over occasionally and join them.

He remembers the conversation often revolving around zone defenses ? both Boeheim and Chaney were throwbacks that way ? and why this team or that was still playing, when they couldn't stop an usher from scoring if he wandered down from the seats and onto the floor, then happened to catch the ball in the paint.

All these years later Boeheim is one of the winningest coaches in the game and still the only one who uses a 2-3 zone full-time. That's why O'Connell thinks he'll beat Ohio State.

"In the NBA, it's man-to-man defense all the time and college guys who want to get there hate playing zone. They think it's a waste of their time. Plus it's harder to teach than people think," he said.

"Boeheim's a genius that way. He recruits guys with big wingspans ? look at the three guys on the baseline for Syracuse; when their arms are stretched, they practically reach baseline to baseline standing in one spot. If you don't think that gets into an opponent's head, ask Ohio State at the end tonight.

Coaches call players like that "long," and they're desirable as recruits go. But somebody has to put the ball in the basket on other end, too. Boeheim's real genius was convincing the few McDonald's All-Americans he was able to recruit early on that defense was more than the time that elapsed between their last shot and the next. Now he's got it all, and a better seat for games in the bargain.

STAT OF THE DAY

Since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985 there have been a number of longshots that have made it to the Elite Eight, but taking that next step to the Final Four is another story. On Saturday, No. 7 Florida will face No. 4 Louisville looking to become the first 7 seed to ever advance to the Final Four since the field expanded to 64. No. 7 seeds are 0-6 in Elite Eight games since then, yet, over the same period, No. 8 seeds are 4-3 and No. 11 seeds 3-2. No. 9 and No. 10 seeds, on the other hand, are a combined 0-8.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It's always funny to me. I never hear anybody yelling at Mike Krzyzewski to go back and play zone. Why is that? He's such a good coach, you don't question him? Is that what that is? Really? Somebody shook their head down here. Okay, that means I'm not a good coach, so you can question me." Boeheim replying to a question about whether his faith in zone defense was "unshakeable."

Book Review : BOOK REVIEW: The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It by Ricki Lewis

Review by Alexandra Witze

By Ricki Lewis

Gene therapy, long heralded as the savior of those suffering from rare genetic disorders, has a lot to thank Corey Haas for. Haas was 8 years old when, in 2008, doctors injected engineered viruses into his eyes in an attempt to cure his hereditary blindness. It worked, and that success swept away shadows that had haunted gene therapy for nearly two decades.

Genetics writer Ricki Lewis uses Haas? story to bookend the checkered history of gene therapy?the idea of replacing a defective gene with a working one in order to knock out disease. In theory, it sounds clever. In practice, it has been fiendishly difficult. Most notably, 18-year-old Jesse Gelsinger died in a 1999 clinical trial of a gene therapy treatment for a nonfatal liver disease. His death temporarily shuddered the field to a halt. Lewis clearly lays out how far gene therapy has come since then. Among other things, scientists have found better viral vectors to deliver the new genes, so that the patient?s body does not go into immune overload.

Much of this progress has been pushed forward by the anxious parents of children suffering from rare genetic disorders such as the brain-destroying adrenoleukodystrophy best known from the movie Lorenzo?s Oil. From the hallways of patient conferences to the National Institutes of Health library in Bethesda, Md., Lewis adroitly sketches the heartbreaking world of families searching for a cure.

And while her reporting steers clear of unfounded optimism, her message is ultimately a positive one: Gene therapy is here to stay. Soon, Corey Haas, not Jesse Gelsinger, will be the name most people remember.
