Southwest Applied Technology College eliminates waiting list for CNA training; courses start July 8

swatc-nursing-program

?

CEDAR CITY - Recently, Southwest Applied Technology College announced that its upcoming Nursing Assistant Certification Program starting July 8, along with all upcoming nursing assistant sessions, will no longer require a waiting list for applicants.

This is good news for potential students who previously had to wait six months to a year to apply for this popular program. It is one of the shorter courses offered at SWATC, only 10 weeks long with a short externship following the course work.

?Now, without a waiting list, we are able to offer enrollment immediately into an upcoming class session, as soon as a student has completed all of their required documentation and made their payment for the course,? Jayne Crabdree of SWATC Team Student Services said. ?We find this encourages students to be proactive in getting themselves prepared to enroll on their own time frame, complete the enrollment process in a timely fashion, to get in and get trained, get certified and then gain employment in this field. It?s a win-win situation for the college and the students that are well prepared and motivated to get started in this training.?

A nursing assistant works in many health care areas under the supervision of a registered nurse. The SWATC program prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to assist ill patients and the elderly with tasks related to daily living such as assisting with meals, hygiene, getting out of bed and taking vital signs. Successful completion of this program qualifies the student to receive state certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant with the Utah Nursing Assistant Registry.

The next Nursing Assistant Certification Program at SWATC begins July 8. Although the waiting period has been waived, applicants do have some unique qualifications that must be met before acceptance into the program. All students must be age 17 or older on the first day of class and must have the following required immunizations: Hepatitis B series, one dose Tdap, proof of MMR and varicella immunity or vaccinations. In addition, applicants must be CPR certified and have two TB screenings.

Resources

Applications are being accepted at SWATC?s main campus at 510 West 800 South in Cedar City, or online. Students must be enrolled by July 3, as Student Services will be closed July 4 and 5 for Independence Day. The next nursing assistant session will start September 17. For more information, call 435-586-2899.

The Newcomer's Guide To Efficient Internet Promotion - Maynas Eric

It is no secret that there is a lot of hard work involved in Website marketing. Hard work and persistence can help your Internet promotion plan improve your bottom line. It does no good to work very hard at pointless tasks. The tips listed here will get you going in the right direction.

A client mailing list is vital. Post notification on your website to collect emails. However, if you want to be slightly more aggressive, request it in order for customers to purchase items off your site. Either way, you can use this information later to send out sales information, offer promotional materials or to ask for customer feedback.

You need to create a great site before worrying about getting it ranked. Building a great website should be your very first step in starting a web business. Once your website operates without glitches and looks great, you are ready to move forward with marketing.

TIP! To increase your ad clicks, place an image on your page that, when clicked, leads to a page that describes the item you are advertising or selling. Ensure you use the font that you use in your articles and linking it.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they?d like to see. While variety is desirable, ensure that your options are presented in an organized way.

Try putting a blog on your site and updating it regularly. Frequent blogging is a great way of keeping your potential customers informed and up to date about your business. Having a blog also makes your site larger, which gives search engines more material to index and should thus bring you more traffic.

You have everything you need to be successful with internet marketing. Fancy computer programs and overpriced get-rich-quick schemes can?t compare to a person with knowledge and the desire to get the job done. Just work hard and imagine what you can achieve when you are marketing yourself.

TIP! Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a part of your Internet marketing campaign. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles.

To build a good website, be as content-focused and as comprehensive as you can. Your main goal should be to teach the viewer about your product in a timely manner. Repetitive descriptions and data, facts and information that the customer will find irrelevant or even boring, should be avoided.

Video marketing is an awesome way to generate interest in your business. Incorporating an informative video onto your website is a great method for gaining the attention of your viewers. Sharing these videos should be easy thanks to social networks and blogs.

To become a successful internet marketer, you need dedication and a high work ethic rather than luck. There is no such story about a business that just got lucky in their success. Coca Cola?s success isn?t pure luck, but rather years of research and work that culminated in a wildly successful soft drink. Not at all. They did a superb job of marketing their product.

TIP! A ?squeeze page? can be an effective way to gather contact info for your mailing list. This will encourage visitors to enter their email addresses.

The majority of cellular providers permit multiple numbers to be routed to a single phone. Therefore, it is wise to get a dedicated number.

To bolster the credibility of your web business, you should try to land interviews with authorities within your niche who are well respected. The interviews can be done on video, audio, or in text form. Your interview will boost readership of your website, improve your reputation as someone in the know and give you more incoming traffic.

You should approach banner advertising differently, and go for a unique approach when designing one for your website. The more appealing and original your banner ad appears, the more people you?ll have clicking on it.

TIP! Check out what your competition is up to. You can check your competition?s site to see what they have.

Consider creating a web page for comments and customer reviews of your products and services. Customer reviews can help establish loyalty and will increase your reputation in the industry.

Add the word ?fast? in you advertisement campaigns and add language that would strengthen your products. Customers value speedy service, which is why you want to ensure that your products are delivered quickly.

TIP! If you website is static and rarely ever changes, perhaps you should consider including a blog on your site. New content gets the attention of the search engines which will increase your ranking in their listings and lead to more traffic for your site.

Offering free gifts or promotions will make your customers feel valued. Sometimes, it is easy to overlook simple things such as this, but offering freebies can keep customers coming back.

Customers will order their products faster if you give them incentives to do so. This could include free shipping, faster shipping or free gift wrapping. One way to do this is to offer free shipping to the first 100 customers who purchase a specified item. Offering incentives can encourage more people to purchase your product and promote customer satisfaction.

Are you searching for some way to do online marketing? Encourage people to give you their email address or to connect with you on social networks by advertising special offers regularly. Offer freebies or contests and ask them if you can send them future emails. A customer will provide their email if they get something in return for it.

TIP! Internet marketing ventures will not succeed through chance, only through deliberate effort and hard work can you hope to enjoy success. No one ever got rich in their own business from luck.

Employ a lot of descriptions on the site. Adjectives work very well in the world of web marketing. Be creative, and come up with your own words and site- or product-specific jargon. Make them want to revisit your site just to read what you have to say.

Write relevant content and submit it to article directories online. Make sure these articles are signed with your full name and contain information about your business. If you get published in an online magazine, include a link to your site. You can entice the editors with commissions or freebies that encourage them to publish your content.

Offer something free with your business name and logo on it. For example, if it?s a wallpaper, submit it to sites that offer free wallpapers. Many websites are available that give out free e-content and are easy to submit too.

TIP! Put customer testimonials on your site. It is easy to claim that your product is effective, but without good, solid proof, your audience may not buy it.

Many people won?t believe ad copy. For years, advertising has been misleading. Because of this, you have to show proof of what you claim on your website. Examples of this include testimonials, before-and-after photographs, and test reports. Just do not say anything that you cannot back up. You must take your customer?s word as truthful and sincere. Don?t take advantage of people. You will get a great reputation and gain customers to do business with for a long time.

Take advantage of these hints and ensure that you are making positive strides toward maximum profits. Armed with the information you learned here, and with a bit of hard work, soon you will see the results of your website marketing efforts.

Obama tells Egyptians to talk, not fight

By Maggie Fick and Alexander Dziadosz

CAIRO (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama called on Egypt's government and opposition on Saturday to engage each other in constructive dialogue and prevent violence spilling out across the region.

Bloodshed on Friday killed at least three people, including an American student, and mass rallies are planned for Sunday aimed at unseating Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Tens of thousands from both sides rallied again on Saturday across Egypt, although there were fewer reports of violence.

Obama said he was "looking at the situation with concern".

Hundreds have been wounded and at least eight killed in street fighting for over a week as political deadlock deepens. On Friday, a bomb killed a protester at a rally by the Suez Canal. Washington is pulling non-essential staff out of Egypt.

"Every party has to denounce violence," Obama said at the other end of Africa, in Pretoria. "We'd like to see the opposition and President Mursi engage in a more constructive conversation about how they move their country forward because nobody is benefiting from the current stalemate."

He added that it was "challenging, given there is not a tradition of democracy in Egypt".

Mursi's critics have dismissed U.S. calls for restraint as a sign of Washington backing Mursi, just as it backed Hosni Mubarak before he was deposed by people power in early 2011.

They now aim to repeat that feat, hoping millions will march to demand new elections on Sunday - when Mursi completes a year in power. They accuse his Muslim Brotherhood of hijacking the revolution and using electoral majorities to monopolize power.

"Egypt is the largest country in the Arab world," Obama said. "The entire region is concerned that, if Egypt continues with this constant instability, that has adverse effects more broadly." U.S. missions would be protected, he said. Last year, a consulate in Libya was overrun and Americans killed.

ARMY ALERT

The Egyptian army is on alert. Funded by Washington for decades since a peace deal with Israel, the army warned politicians it may step in if they lose control of the streets - an outcome some in the diffuse opposition may quietly welcome, but to which Mursi's Islamist allies might respond with force.

The president met the head of the military on Saturday, along with the interior minister, to check security plans.

Protest organizers said on Saturday a petition calling on Mursi to quit had 22 million signatures - over 40 percent of the electorate and 7 million more than they announced 10 days ago.

The figure could not be verified, but independent analysts say there is a real prospect of very large demonstrations. Organizers have called for rallies in Cairo in the afternoon.

A few thousand activists were camping out at rival centers in the capital on Saturday. There was no sign of trouble, though some 40 were injured in scuffles at Beni Suef, to the south.

In the Sinai peninsula, near borders with Israel and the Gaza Strip, a police general was gunned down. The region's violence is emblematic of poor security since the revolution.

Several offices of Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood were attacked on Friday, including in Alexandria where American Andrew Pochter, 21, was fatally stabbed as he filmed events and another man died. In Port Said on the Suez Canal, a home-made grenade killed a protester.

VIOLENCE, CAMPING

The U.S. embassy evacuated non-essential staff and warned citizens to avoid Egypt. An airport source said dozens of U.S. personnel and their families left Cairo for Germany on Saturday.

The U.S. ambassador has angered liberals by saying Mursi was legitimately elected and that protests may be counter-productive for an economy crippled by unrest that has cut tourism revenues.

In the capital, Islamist supporters were still camped outside a suburban mosque where they had gathered in the many thousands on Friday to vent anger and fear over a return of army-backed rule. Some speakers also urged reconciliation.

They had their own security men, carrying staves and wearing protective gear, frisking visitors. One activist, Abdelhakim Abdelfattah, 47, said he hoped to avoid violence but that many Islamists would take to the streets if Mursi was under pressure.

"They'll come down to defend his legitimacy, not with weapons, but with their bodies," Abdelfattah said. "What's the nature of this legitimacy? The ballot box."

On Tahrir Square, seat of the uprising of early 2011, flags and tents form a base camp from where protesters plan to march to Mursi's office. Amr Riad, 26, said: "We're peaceful. But if those who come at us are violent we'll defend ourselves."

Liberal opposition leaders dismissed an offer of cooperation from Mursi this week as too little too late. The Brotherhood, which says at least five of its supporters have been killed in days of street fighting, accuses liberals of allying with those loyal to Mubarak to mount a coup against the electoral process.

A coalition of Islamist groups supporting Mursi said the violence of the past days confirmed there was "a conspiracy to spread chaos in the country and reproduce the defunct regime".

The opposition says the Brotherhood are trying to hoard power, Islamize a diverse society and throttle dissent. They cite as evidence Mursi's broadsides against critical media and legal proceedings launched against journalists and satirists.

With long lines for fuel adding to economic woes, activists hope millions of the less politically engaged will protest out of disappointment that the uprising has not brought prosperity.

Senior opposition figure and Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei said in a message on YouTube Mursi's government had failed, and urged Egyptians to take to the streets peacefully on Sunday to get the revolution back on track.

"All Egypt needs to go out tomorrow to say we want to return to the ballot box, and to build the foundation of the house we will all live in," he said.

The opposition, which has lost a series of elections, wants to reset the rules that emerged in a messy process of army and then Islamist rule since Mubarak fell. It wants Mursi to make way for an interim administration led by a senior judge.

Egypt's leading religious authority warned of the risk of "civil war". A senior figure at Cairo's Al-Azhar institute said Sunday should be a day of dialogue, a "catalyst" for leaders to understand their duty - and the "dangerous alternative".

The head of the Coptic Church also called for dialogue and peace. Millions of Christians worry about new Islamic laws.

Russia debates letting Snowden in from the cold

But would a Kremlin offer of asylum to the former NSA contractor be cynical or altruistic?

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / June 28, 2013

Former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, who Russian officials say is spending his sixth day hiding somewhere in Moscow's cavernous Sheremetyevo airport, has still not been heard from or even spotted by journalists who've been eagerly combing the transit zone for a glimpse of him.

But his presence has not passed unnoticed in Moscow political circles, where a growing number of voices are suggesting that he should be brought in from the cold and offered asylum in Russia.

While a skeptic may perceive a cynical streak behind the unfolding public discussion ? a desire to exploit Mr. Snowden's situation for propaganda points against the US ? it might also be argued that some of the Western concepts being introduced into mainstream Russia political discourse, pretty much for the first time, may be hard to put back in the box later.

One prominent theme is the jarring notion that the old cold war paradigm ? the US-led "free world" versus the Soviet "evil empire" ? is being been stood on its head, and the US now looks like a ponderous, bureaucratic police state, while modern Russia has morphed into a beacon of hope for Western freedom-seekers.

"[Julian] Assange, [Bradley] Manning and Snowden are not spies who sold classified information for money. They acted on their beliefs. They are new dissidents, fighters against the system," the head of the State Duma's international affairs committee, Alexei Pushkov, tweeted Wednesday.

Mr. Pushkov, who excels at skewering Western "double standards," has maintained a steady stream of similar comments on his Twitter feed in recent days.

"The idealist Snowden was apparently convinced it would all turn out like a Hollywood movie: he will expose abuses and democracy will prevail. But life, and the US, are tougher," he tweeted Friday.

A somewhat different tack was taken by the head of the Kremlin's in-house human rights commission, Mikhail Fedotov, who told journalists that Snowden "deserves protection" and should file a request for refuge in Russia.

"If Mr. Snowden files such a request, then it can be considered by the president," Fedotov told the independent Interfax agency on Thursday.

"This situation is utterly clear to me from the point of view of human rights protection: a person, disclosing secrets concealed by special services, if these secrets are a threat to the society, a threat to millions people ? which refers to the total surveillance of the Internet ? such a person does deserve political asylum in this or that country," Fedotov said.

The official line, expressed by President Vladimir Putin, is that Russia will not hand Snowden over to the US but that?he should move on, the sooner the better.

Before he goes, however, Russia's Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, has struck a special committee and invited him in to testify about the impact of NSA spying on Russian citizens.

Sen. Ruslan Gattarov, head of the Federation Council's working group to investigate Snowden's claims, says his main concern is not to investigate the NSA.

He insists the committee's key interest is to explore the alleged abuse-of-trust by giant Internet companies ? such as Google, Yahoo, and Facebook, and others with huge slices of the Russian market ? which Snowden's revelations suggest have handed over user data to the NSA.

"We don't want to get involved in secret service conspiracies. Whatever the NSA was doing is not particularly our concern," Mr. Gattarov says.

"We want to know how it happens that big global Internet companies, which operate in Russia, too, find it possible to leak user data to a third party. The public has been assured by these companies that our personal correspondence, our bank accounts, our Internet habits are all perfectly secure. But what we're learning from Mr. Snowden's exposures strongly suggest otherwise."

"So, we want to talk with him. As soon as he settles his status, we invite him to come to the Federation Council and discuss with us any evidence that is relevant to this probe," he adds.

Sergei Markov, a frequent adviser to President Putin, says the growing public debate over what to do about Snowden really is something new, and it puts the Kremlin in a difficult spot.

"Russia really would prefer if Snowden went somewhere else, but it is quite possible that we'd take him in if he asked for asylum here. It would create difficulties with the US, but Russia would lose a lot of credibility if it were to turn him down," Mr. Markov says.

"Of course, Snowden probably doesn't want refuge in Russia. He belongs to international civil society, the so-called 'warriors of freedom,' who probably dislike Russia as much as they do the US. He'd probably see Russian asylum as the total failure of his mission. But in Russian society, there is a real, very healthy discussion going on about this. People are reexamining their beliefs. For example, human rights advocates who normally just criticize the Kremlin are being forced to answer the question: Are you more pro-American, or more pro-human rights?" he says.

"If you're more pro-human rights, it means you should support Snowden even if it means offending the US."

Microsoft tweaks Windows 8, blamed for PC slump

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft on Wednesday released a preview version of an update to Windows 8, aiming to address some of the gripes people have with the company's flagship operating system.

At a conference in San Francisco, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged that the company pushed hard to get people to adopt a radical new tile-based "Modern" user interface in Windows 8. Microsoft is now back-pedaling, making it easier to reach and use the older "desktop" interface.

"Let's make it easier to start applications the way we're used to," Ballmer told the audience of software developers. "What we will show you today is a refined blend of our Desktop experience and our Modern experience."

Microsoft made the preview of Windows 8.1 available for free as a download.

Windows 8.1 will allow people to boot up in Desktop mode. There, they'll find a button that resembles the old Start button. It won't take users to the old Start menu, but to the new "Modern" Windows 8 start screen. Still, the re-introduction of the familiar button may make it easier for longtime Windows users to get accustomed to the changes. A common complaint about Windows 8 is that it hides features and functions, and replaces buttons with gestures and invisible click zones that have to be memorized.

Other new features of Windows 8.1 include more options to use multiple apps. People will be able to determine how much of the screen each app takes while showing up to four different programs, rather than just two. The update will also offer more integrated search results, showing users previews of websites, apps and documents that are on the device, all at once.

Microsoft also touted a broadening array of applications specifically written for Windows 8, among them one from Facebook.

Frank Gillett, an analyst with research firm Forrester, said that with 8.1, Microsoft is doing a better job of uniting the Desktop and Modern screens, but the changes don't run deep.

"They smoothed off some rough edges, but they don't fundamentally change the experience of having two experiences within one operating system," he said.

The preview version of Windows 8.1 is meant for Microsoft's partners and other technology developers, but anyone can download it. The release comes exactly eight months after desktops, laptops and tablets with Windows 8 went on sale. The version of the Windows 8.1 update meant for the general public will come later in the year, though the company hasn't announced a specific date.

Julie Larson-Green, the head of Microsoft's Windows division, said the update, rapid by Microsoft standards, "shows how much more responsive our engineering has become."

Many of the new features have been shown already. A three-day Build conference, which started Wednesday in San Francisco, gives Microsoft developers a chance to learn more about the new system and try it out. It also will give the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft's ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple's iPad and various devices running Google's Android software.

Windows 8, released Oct. 26, was meant to be Microsoft's answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s.

Microsoft and PC makers had been looking to Windows 8 to revive sales of personal computers, but some people have been put off by the radical makeover. Research firm IDC said the operating system actually slowed down the market. Although Microsoft says it has sold more than 100 million Windows 8 licenses so far, IDC said worldwide shipments of personal computers fell 14 percent in the first three months of this year, the worst since tracking began in 1994.

Windows 8 was also supposed to make Microsoft more competitive in the growing market for tablet computers. But Windows tablets had less than a 4 percent market share in the first quarter, compared with 57 percent for Android and 40 percent for Apple's iPad.

One big problem is the fact that Windows 8 doesn't work well on smaller screens, making Windows tablets less competitive with cheaper tablets such as Apple's iPad Mini, Google's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD. Microsoft built Windows 8 primarily to run on tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens, and it is trying to address that shortcoming in Windows 8.1.

It's crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.

Microsoft is addressing that shift by banking its future on touch controls. Its strategy calls for having just one operating system work on both tablets and traditional computers. That allows popular Windows programs such as Office to work well on tablets, too. But in making Windows easy for touch screens, mouse and keyboard commands are more complex to use and figure out.

Apple and Google, on the other hand, believe people use those machines differently and have opted to keep their operating systems separate. Apple, for instance, believes that it can be tiresome to have to constantly move your arm to touch a desktop or laptop screen. That's not a problem with tablets because you're already holding it.

As for the growing interest in smaller, cheaper tablets, Microsoft has said the company is working with other manufacturers to make some. At the conference, it didn't confirm reports that it is making its own.

Microsoft also said very little about Windows RT, the Windows 8 variant that's designed to run on the same phone-style processors that let the iPad and Android tablets be lighter and have longer battery lives than Windows 8 tablets with PC-style Intel processors. Windows RT has been hamstrung by a lack of applications, since it won't run older Windows programs.

At the conference, Microsoft showed off an Acer tablet with an 8-inch screen ? a size that would be a good fit for an RT device ? but it ran full-blown Windows 8 instead.

Microsoft Corp. just cut the effective price of its Surface tablet with Windows RT by including a keyboard cover for free. The cover sells for $120 or $130 on its own.

Microsoft also said this month that it would give buyers of the RT version of Surface the Outlook email and calendar program at no extra charge ? joining other Office freebies Excel, Word and Power Point ? and sweetening the offer for the device that is priced starting at $499. The new programs will come as part of the Windows 8.1 update.

May Pending Home Sales Rise 6.7% - Business Insider

Pending home sales beat expectations rising 6.7% month-over-month in May. This beat expectations for a 1% rise.

On a year-over-year basis, pending home sales were up 12.5%, beating expectations for an 8.3% rise.

Pending home sales climbed to the highest level since late 2006, according to NAR.

"Even with limited choices, it appears some of the rise in contract signings could be from buyers wanting to take advantage of current affordability conditions before mortgage interest rates move higher," Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist said in a press release.

"This implies a continuation of double-digit price increases from a year earlier, with a strong push from pent-up demand."

A regional breakdown showed that pending home sales were up 16% on the month, but 1% on the year in the West. In the Midwest, the index was up 10.2% on the month and 22.2% on the year. In the Northeast, the index was up 14.3% on the year, but flat on the month. And in the South the index was up 2.8% on the month, and 12.3% on the year.

April's numbers were however revised down. Pending home sales were up 12.9% on the year, but down 0.5% on the month. This compares with an initial reading of 13.9% and 0.3% rise.

Investors watch this number because it is considered a leading indicator of the housing market.?

Homes evacuated as new Colo. wildfire erupts

EVERGREEN, Colo. (AP) ? A new wildfire in the foothills southwest of Denver forced the evacuation of dozens of homes Wednesday as hot and windy conditions in much of Colorado and elsewhere in the West made it easy for fires to start and spread.

The Lime Gulch Fire in Pike National Forest was small but devouring trees about 30 miles southwest of Denver in southern Jefferson County. More than 100 people within three miles of the fire were ordered to leave, but no structures appeared to be threatened, Jefferson County Sheriff Ted Mink said. The evacuation order was later extended to the unincorporated township of Buffalo Creek.

"The good news is, it's a very sparsely populated area as far as houses go," Mink said.

He said the fire might have been sparked by lightning a day earlier, then quickly grew to an estimated 150 to 200 acres Wednesday in high winds.

The fire zone was in steep, heavily forested mountain terrain, south of where last year's Lower North Fork Fire damaged and destroyed 23 homes and killed three people. That fire was triggered by a prescribed burn that escaped containment lines.

The blaze came as up to 600 Arizona firefighters battled a nearly eight-square-mile wildfire in Prescott National Forest that was zero percent contained. It erupted Tuesday afternoon and led to the evacuation of 460 homes. A large blaze in New Mexico, meanwhile, charred southern New Mexico's Gila National Forest and grew to 47 square miles.

In Colorado, some evacuees said they were ready to leave Wednesday in minutes, having practiced fire evacuations after last year's Lower North Fork Fire.

Karalyn Pytel was home vacuuming with her 6-year-old daughter when her husband reached her to notify her they needed to leave. The 34-year-old said she and her daughter were out of the house quickly.

She grabbed her daughter's favorite blanket, plus a laptop computer, a jewelry box and some family heirlooms.

"I grabbed a laundry basket and just threw stuff in it. I don't even know what clothes they are," Pytel said while filling out paperwork at an evacuation center.

Two U.S. Air Force Reserve C-130s arrived quickly to drop slurry around the fire in Colorado. The specially-equipped cargo planes, attached to the 302nd Airlift Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, were operating out of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in suburban Denver, said Airlift Wing spokeswoman Ann Skarban at Peterson.

The C-130s had just finished duty on Sunday fighting a 22-square-mile wildfire near Colorado Springs that destroyed 509 homes and killed two people. More than 960 fire personnel at the Black Forest Fire contended with wind gusts Wednesday as they tried to contain the fire and find and extinguish hot spots.

In Black Forest, northeast of Colorado Springs, authorities said Marc and Robin Herklotz were killed as the fire erupted June 11. Their bodies were found in their garage by a car, as if they were trying to flee, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa has said.

Marc Herklotz, 52, and Robin Herklotz, 50, worked at Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites, and were based at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, the Air Force said. Marc Herklotz entered the Air Force in 1983 but most recently was working as a civilian employee. Robin Herklotz was an Air Force contractor.

Also Wednesday, in western Colorado, a wind-driven wildfire southeast of Rangely prompted the evacuation of a youth camp as a precaution. Rio Blanco County Undersheriff Michael Joos said the camp wasn't in immediate danger, but about 40 kids and a half dozen adults were asked to leave due to high winds.

Back in Evergreen, Pytel was asked whether Wednesday's evacuation has made her rethink living in a mountainous area at high risk for wildfires. Pytel said her family discussed moving after last year's wildfire but dismissed the idea.

"No matter where you go, really, it's always something. It's either a tornado, a hurricane, an earthquake (or) a fire. For us, it's our tornado," Pytel said.

4 shot, 3 dead in Ky. condominium complex shooting

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? A domestic situation apparently prompted the midweek shooting at a condominium complex in an upscale Louisville neighborhood that claimed three lives and left a fourth person badly wounded, police said.

Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell identified the dead from the shooting Wednesday afternoon as a girl, a 38-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man. He didn't release their names nor disclose a possible motive in the hours after the shooting.

He added that a woman in her 60s was hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting at the Lakeview Condominum complex located near a neighborhood of upper middle class homes in Louisville is being investigated by a homicide unit, Mitchell said.

He said the suspect apparently was among the dead and police don't think anyone was "on the loose." He didn't identify the suspect but said police had gathered evidence and were interviewing witnesses.

The University of Louisville Hospital, contacted by The Associated Press early Thursday, said it could not release any information on the woman's condition until she was identified by name.

Mitchell said the shootings took place inside a residence but he declined to say whether there were other people inside at the time.

The Lakeview Condominiums complex lies in a neighborhood filled with upper-middle-class homes with manicured lawns.

About two hours after the shootings, a man and a woman who was crying went to the area cordoned off by police. They didn't speak to reporters but crossed the police tape and talked briefly to an officer before being escorted back to their vehicle to leave.

About a half-hour later, a different pair came and also spoke to police, the woman visibly shaken and weeping, before being walked back to their vehicle and driving off.

Molly Hoekstra said she has lived in the complex for nearly two years. She returned home Wednesday to find the building blocked off by police tape.

"It's always been really safe and neighborly," she said of the community, adding she was shaken up and would spend the night with relatives.

Alexa Hall, a resident, told The Courier-Journal newspaper ( http://cjky.it/104yWAC ) of Louisville that she was at the complex's pool when a man and a boy came running, shouting that shots had been fired. They urged someone to call police, according to the newspaper.

She described a scene of panic and confusion soon after the shooting.

"Nobody really knew what to do," she said, adding people stood by watching as police arrived.

Duke Energy names insider to take over for Rogers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Duke Energy's chief financial officer will take over for retiring CEO Jim Rogers at the end of the month.

Lynn Good, 54, has been CFO since 2009. She will also take a seat on the company board.

Rogers will retain his board chairman seat until he steps down at the end of the year.

The board plans to name one of its independent directors as chair-elect in the coming weeks. That person will become chairman when Rogers departs.

Rogers, 65, has been president and CEO at Duke Energy Corp. since 2006. In November, he announced plans to retire from the Charlotte, N.C., company by the end of 2013 after the contentious takeover of Progress Energy.

Wedding Insurance: Help For Bridal Fails | Bankrate.com

insurance

Wedding day disasters come in all sizes, from lost rings and ruined bridal gowns to slip-and-fall and alcohol-related personal injuries to unpredictable weather events to plain old cold feet that can shut down a once-in-a-lifetime celebration faster than you can say "I do."

Fortunately, wedding insurance can help you absorb the financial hit should your big day suddenly veer off course.

Policies cost as little as $95. Couples can insure against financial losses due to:

  • Wedding cancellation or postponement because of severe weather, sudden illness within the wedding party, or unforeseen military deployment of the bride or groom.
  • Loss or theft of wedding attire, gifts, jewelry and luggage.
  • Mishaps or no-shows involving the florist, caterer, limousine service, photographer/videographer, disc jockey/band or officiant (the person officiating the ceremony).
  • Sudden closure or unavailability of the wedding venue.
  • Personal liability should guests fall ill, become injured or cause property damage. (There's typically "host liquor liability" in case a guest becomes inebriated at the wedding and causes an auto accident or similar harm.)

Help with 'knotty' problems

Wedding insurance can't recreate that special day exactly, but it can reimburse you for the nonrefundable deposits you paid to vendors, pay for reassembling the wedding party with all the trappings for a photo/video reshoot and provide deposit money to line up new vendors for your rescheduled nuptials.

It wasn't always easy or affordable to insure a wedding. Among the three major wedding underwriters, Fireman's Fund started offering wedding coverage only in the 1990s, Aon entered in 1999, and Travelers followed in 2007.

But interest in wedding insurance grew as the price of U.S. weddings rose. In 2012, the average U.S. wedding cost $25,656, according to The Wedding Report, a research firm that tracks nuptial numbers. Reality TV has helped popularize wedding insurance, too, thanks to the matrimonial mishaps sometimes portrayed on bridal shows such as "Bridezillas."

'I do -- want insurance'

"Wedding insurance has definitely become more popular," says Fireman's Fund spokeswoman Janet Ruiz. "People are planning further out for weddings, some as long as a year ahead, so they're aware of making and protecting their deposits."

Chantal Cyr, vice president for Travelers' wedding insurance unit, agrees. "It's a significant investment -- the cost of a new car," she says. "You'd never buy a new car without insuring it."

In fact, Cyr says some couples today may have no choice but to insure their wedding.

"We've seen a growing demand from venues asking the bride and groom to buy wedding insurance," she says. "Venues would have their own (coverage), but it may be subject to a deductible and potentially a rate increase. They want the bride and groom to carry that coverage."

What the policies can cover

Today, all three major providers of wedding cancellation and liability coverage offer the convenience of buying a policy online: Fireman's Fund at Wedsure.com, Aon at WedSafe.com and Travelers at ProtectMyWedding.com. Couples can purchase coverage as early as two years before and as late as the day of the wedding, depending on the carrier.

Most policies cover the entire wedding event, from the rehearsal dinner through the wedding ceremony and reception. Policies typically extend to destination weddings in Canada, the Caribbean, Great Britain, Mexico and U.S. territories, though specific locales vary somewhat by insurer.

Each major carrier offers a signature feature in the wedding niche. Travelers policies have no deductible. Aon offers the highest liability limit at $5 million. Fireman's Fund is the only insurer to offer "change of heart" coverage, though it compensates only the wedding's financier (i.e., mom and dad), not the couple, and the cancellation due to a bride's or groom's cold feet must be made at least a year before the festivities.

Don't walk down the aisle without it

Not long ago, Master Bridal Consultant Mark Kingsdorf of The Queen of Hearts Wedding Consultants in Philadelphia would never have suggested wedding insurance to his clients for fear they might take his advice the wrong way.

"It's a little like asking, 'Have you guys thought about a prenup?'" he chuckles. "It sort of gives couples the creeps."

Today, part of his job involves collecting certificates of insurance from each of the vendors that will be on-site for the big day.

And Kingsdorf strongly recommends that all couples obtain liability coverage, either as an event rider on their (or their parents') home insurance, or through a wedding insurer.

"Even when you know 'almost everybody' there, there's the date du jour of that girl you went to school with who gets drunk at your party and kills somebody driving home," he says. "By the same token, if you're hosting a reception at the Pennsylvania Museum and somebody gets drunk and falls into a sarcophagus, you pray that you've got that $1 million liability insurance."

For those whose wedding budget is close to or exceeds the $25,000 national average, Kingsdorf says wedding insurance is a classic no-brainer.

"A couple hundred bucks here is a really minimal investment to make sure things go well," he says.

Herbal extract boosts fruit fly lifespan by nearly 25 percent

June 18, 2013 ? The herbal extract of a yellow-flowered mountain plant long used for stress relief was found to increase the lifespan of fruit fly populations by an average of 24 percent, according to UC Irvine researchers.

But it's how Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root, did this that grabbed the attention of study leaders Mahtab Jafari and Sam Schriner. They discovered that Rhodiola works in a manner completely unrelated to dietary restriction and affects different molecular pathways.

This is significant, said Jafari, associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences, because dietary restriction is considered the most robust method of improving lifespan in laboratory animals, and scientists have been scrambling to identify compounds that can mimic its effects.

"We found that Rhodiola actually increases lifespan on top of that of dietary restriction," Jafari said. "It demonstrates that Rhodiola can act even in individuals who are already long-lived and healthy. This is quite unlike resveratrol, which appears to only act in overfed or unhealthy individuals."

The researchers proved this by putting flies on a calorie-restricted diet. It has been shown that flies live longer when the amount of yeast they consume is decreased. Jafari and Schriner expected that if Rhodiola functioned in the same manner as dietary restriction, it would not work in these flies. But it did. They also tested Rhodiola in flies in which the molecular pathways of dietary restriction had been genetically inactivated. It still worked.

Not only did Rhodiola improve lifespan an average of 24 percent in both sexes and multiple strains of flies, but it also delayed the loss of physical performance in flies as they aged and even extended the lives of old flies. Jafari's group previously had shown that the extract decreased the natural production of reactive oxygen species molecules in the fly mitochondria and protected both flies and cultured human cells against oxidative stress.

Jafari and Schriner, an assistant project scientist in Jafari's laboratory, are not claiming that Rhodiola supplements will enable humans to live longer, but their discovery is enhancing scientific understanding of how supplements believed to promote longevity actually work in the body.

Rhodiola has already shown possible health benefits in humans, such as decreasing fatigue, anxiety and depression; boosting mood, memory and stamina; and preventing altitude sickness. Grown in cold climates at high elevations, the herb has been used for centuries by Scandinavians and Russians to reduce stress. It's also thought to have antioxidant properties.

Jafari's research group is currently exploring the plant's potential to kill cancer cells, improve Alzheimer's disease and help stem cells grow.

Rhodiola is readily available online and in health food stores. Jafari, though, has analyzed several commercial products and found them to not contain sufficient amounts of the reputed active compounds -- such as rosavin and salidroside -- that characterize high-quality products.

EPA regional head to tour NY Superfund sites

Remember the wave of pundit insanity over the death of Trayvon Martin two Februaries ago? Well, get ready for round two. The trial of George Zimmerman, who stands accused of second degree murder, began today in Sanford, Florida, and immediately inspired one of the most baffling comments ever uttered by a talking head about Martin's late-night confrontation with Zimmerman, even for a story already so loaded with race, death, lawyers, Florida, and inevitably Nancy Grace. ...

World's first large(wafer)-scale production of III-V semiconductor nanowire

June 10, 2013 ? Researchers from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea, and University of Illinois, U.S.A, developed the large-scale heteroepitaxial growth III-V nanowires on a Si wafer.

The research team demonstrated a novel method to epitaxially synthesize structurally and compositionally homogeneous and spatially uniform ternary InAsyP1-y nanowire on Si at wafer-scale using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The high quality of the nanowires is reflected in the remarkably narrow PL and X-ray peak width and extremely low ideality factor in the InAsyP1-y nanowire/Si diode.

A nanowire is a nanostructure with a diameter of the order of a nanometer (10-9 meters). Alternatively, nanowires can be defined as structures that have a thickness or diameter constrained to tens of nanometers or less and an unconstrained length. Technology related to nanowires has been selected as one of the 10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2004 by MIT Technology Review.

High-aspect-ratio semiconductors have led to significant breakthroughs in conventional electrical, optical, and energy harvesting devices. Among such structures, III-V semiconductor nanowires offer unique properties arising from their high electron mobility and absorption coefficients, as well as their direct bandgaps.

A common technique for creating a nanowire is Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) synthesis. This process can produce crystalline nanowires of some semiconductor materials. However, metal catalysts, usually expensive noble metals, should be used for initiating the VLS mechanism. In addition, these metal catalysts are known to significantly degrade the quality of semiconductor nanowires by creating deep levels, thus limiting practical applications of nanowires into opto-electronic devices.

In this work, however, Prof. Choi's group developed a novel technique of growing III-V semiconductor nanowires without metal catalysts or nano-patterning. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD, AIXTRON A200) was used for the growth of the InAsyP1-y. 2 inch Si (111) wafer was cleaned with buffer oxide etch for 1 minute and deionized (DI) water for 2 seconds. Then, the wafer was immediately dipped in poly-L-lysine solution (Sigma-Aldrich inc.) for 3 minutes then rinsed in DI water for 10 seconds. The Si substrate was then loaded into the MOCVD reactor without any delay. The reactor pressure was lowered to 50 mbar with 15liter/min of hydrogen gas flow. Then the reactor was heated to growth temperatures (570 -- 630 ?), and stabilized for 10 minutes.

Kyoung Jin Choi, Associate Professor at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Korea, and Xiuling Li, Professor at University of Illinois, U.S.A. led the research and this description of the new research was published on the web on May 7 in ACS Nano. (Title: Wafer-Scale Production of Uniform InAsyP1-y Nanowire Array on Silicon for Heterogeneous Integration).

"If we develop new technology which manages the density of nanowire and bandgap energy with further study, it is also possible to produce high-efficiency & low-cost large scale solar cells," said Prof. Choi. "This technology will give us a chance to lead the research on the new renewable energy."

Apple Is Making Badass New Mac Pros

Apple Is Making Badass New Mac Pros

Today during the WWDC keynote, we got our first look at what Apple is thinking in terms of the future of Mac Pros. Everyone who said the Mac Pro is dead can just shut up. Here comes a new freaking generation of high-performance computing from Apple, and we couldn't be more excited.

The new Mac Pro will support up to 12-core configurations. They've got the fastest ECC memory the company has ever put into its computers, which is clocked at 1866MHz DDR 3.

For I/O, the new Mac Pros will support (of course) FireWire, and the brand new Thunderbolt 2 standard.

There will also be AMD FirePro graphics capable of running up 4K out of all of its ports?up to three UltraHD displays simultaneously. These are full-on professional machines for current pro users. Apple's demoing Pixar animation this week, running on these machines. Doesn't get more taxing than Pixar.

Apple Is Making Badass New Mac Pros

And of course if you're looking at this thing, you can tell it looks different than the old aluminum boxes we're used to looking at. It kinda looks like a giant trashcan! But the new circular design means the new beasts are 1/8 the volume of the last iterations, while still allowing easy access to the guts for breezy-fast hardware upgrades.

Further details are scarse, but we do know two things: They're made in America, and available later this year.

Hell yes.

Somali pirate attack thwarted by EU Naval Force

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) ? The European Union Naval Force says Somali pirates who took control of a cargo vessel with 14 Indian sailors on board fled after counter piracy ships from the EU and NATO responded.

The EU Naval Force says 14 Indian sailors aboard a dhow alerted officials Wednesday that their craft was under attack from 12 armed pirates. Swedish and Dutch warships responded. The pirates then steered the hijacked vessel toward the coast and abandoned it.

Somali pirates once held dozens of ships and hundreds of hostages. But the number of attacks has dropped considerably due to anti-piracy patrols and armed guards on ships.

The EU Naval Force says Somali pirates haven't hijacked a ship since May 2012. The force says pirates have attacked four ships this year, none successfully.
