mike jones just friends chronicle george lopez bedtime stories micron susan g komen

I'm very excited for this.

Hello! I'm not too keen on writing forum introduction posts, so I've adapted the outline from this site.

1) What's your username? Why'd you pick that username?

Zeprimus - it was a character name I came up with out of the blue while playing an MMO and it's stuck with ever since.

2) How'd you find this place? Google? Why'd you look it up on Google or whatever?

I did find this on Google, by searching for 'roleplaying forums'. I found some pretty interesting other choices, but I'm not looking for that kind of roleplaying. When I was younger, I did some forum roleplaying. I'm back for more because it is enjoyable, simply put.

3) How long have you roleplayed on forums or chat? On what sites? Did you start with tabletop games or such?

I roleplayed in various short-lived forum based RPs for a couple years when I was in high school, and to be honest I can't remember the name of the site now (it may be offline, it's been almost a decade). Since I was in 5th or 6th grade or so, I've played D&D and GURPS amongst a few others with friends. I've also done some in-game RPing in MMOs, LOTRO, Rift, and WoW specifically.

4) In coming to RPG, what've you been looking for specifically? A new home for roleplay? Better roleplay?

I'm looking for any amount of roleplay. Due to life, I'm not able to run or join an active table-top group right now or for the foreseeable future. Plus, forum-based roleplaying allows me to do what I love - write.

5) What kinds of roleplay are you interested in? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Go in-depth about it if you want.

I'm into anything, to be honest. I like all of it. I'm most experienced in fantasy and post-apocalyptic/modern, but for some reason I've become really interested in superhero RP. I'm not too into IP roleplaying anymore, unless it's very loose.

6) What're your hobbies? Do you collect rocks or mount insects?

I'm a senior in English, getting ready to enter an MFA program. I like to write a lot, as well as read and all that stuff. I'm married, so doing anything with my wife - cooking, traveling, watching great TV shows and movies, are all fun. I also play guitar and bass, although they're both casual now (I used to play in a bunch of punk rock bands when I was in high school).

7) What's something you're good at besides writing? Maybe you're on the volleyball team or you're a quick learner? Maybe you play the flute or can fold up chairs amazingly fast? xD

I'm a pretty good driver, which I guess is something. I live in Minnesota, where the roads can be absolute crap for half of the year, so I've learned how to adapt to that. Being a delivery driver for a few years also helped. As for the 'besides writing' bit, writing really is one of my passions - it's what I study and love. I've recorded a CD and EP in the past, written a bunch of songs, played a bunch of shows, so I guess you could say I'm an okay musican (I'm no Minaj, though).

8) Do you have any friends here at RPG that invited you here? Would you want to make more friends while you're here?

None, yet. I'd love to meet new people.

And lastly...

9) Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello?

As long as you have them enabled. ;)

Looking forward to having fun here, and hope to meet some awesome people and get my RP on! Thanks for reading.

-Zeprimus/Tom

Oil trader Vitol in talks over tax-avoidance bill

The Geneva-based company, which has offices in London, is thought to have operated an ?employee benefit trust? (EBT) for more than a decade.

Such schemes, which were used by more than 2,000 companies, allowed employees to avoid paying income tax and companies to avoid national insurance contributions.

HMRC is chasing taxes which were avoided through the schemes before they were categorically outlawed in 2011, and has said it believes a ?large number of EBT schemes didn?t work under the previous legislation?.

Vitol is understood to have closed its scheme in 2011 when the law changed.

Ian Taylor, chief executive of Vitol, told The Sunday Times: ?We will have to pay something. We will work hard to do what is best for our employees, but we must abide by the legislation - and we will.?

Other companies affected include bank JP Morgan, which is said to be close to a ?500m settlement over its scheme.

Mr Taylor told the newspaper he believed that settlement may ?become a template? for others.

A spokesman for HMRC said: ?For legal reasons, we cannot discuss our management of the tax affairs of named businesses.?

A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Black Monday watch: Changes could be fast, vast - Yahoo! Sports

Black Monday is expected to bring plenty of darkness around the NFL, with as many as 10 coaches and many of their general manager bosses bracing for the worst on New Year's Eve. Andy Reid's sunken season in Philadelphia made him a virtual lock to be the biggest name on the unemployment line. Reid, hired by the Eagles in 1999, was the longest-tenured coach in the NFL, a mantel that transfers to Bill Belichick in New England when Reid is officially let go. Owner Jeffrey Lurie, who invested tens of millions in free agency since the start of 2010 to assemble what former backup quarterback Vince Young infamously dubbed the "Dream Team" said an 8-8 record that matched the Eagles' 2011 mark wouldn't be good enough for Reid to retain his job. The Eagles went to the postseason nine times under Reid, including six NFC East championships but only a 1-3 record in the NFC Championship game. It's possible Reid could quickly land on his feet. The native Californian could make sense if the Oakland Raiders or San Diego Chargers make a change. The Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs were among the franchises most likely to begin 2013 with a search for their next coach and personnel boss. Pat Shurmur, 9-22 in two seasons with the Browns, and general manager Tom Heckert were already aware of their fate Saturday. The Bills went 6-10 in 2011 and 5-10 before Sunday's game against the Jets on Gailey's watch. Kansas City had the NFL's worst record for most of the 2012 season. General manager Gene Smith is expected to be the fallguy in Jacksonville.

China launches GPS-like Beidou satellite services across Asia-Pacific region

China launches Beidou satellite GPS services across AsiaPacific region

China has kicked off commercial and public services of its Beidou satellite navigation system across the Asia-Pacific rim in earnest, after finishing trials it started last year. Civilians in the region as far away as Australia are now able to navigate using the satellites to a distance of 30 feet and speeds as low as 0.5 mph -- comparable to (WAAS-less) GPS, according to officials. Currently the nation has 16 navigation satellites aloft along with four experimental models, and expects to provide worldwide coverage by 2020 when it'll have as many as 40 additional units in orbit, according to China Daily. China launched the project in 2000 to avoid reliance on the US GPS system, and joins that service, Russia's GLONASS and eventually Galileo in the EU at the sat nav soirée. Liquid crystal research, future applications advance

Dec. 24, 2012 ? Contributing geometric and topological analyses of micro-materials, University of Massachusetts Amherst mathematician Robert Kusner aided experimental physicists at the University of Colorado (UC) by successfully explaining the observed "beautiful and complex patterns revealed" in three-dimensional liquid crystal experiments. The work is expected to lead to creation of new materials that can be actively controlled.

Kusner is a geometer, an expert in the analysis of variational problems in low-dimensional geometry and topology, which concerns properties preserved under continuous deformation such as stretching and bending. His work over 3 decades has focused on the geometry and topology of curves, surfaces and other spaces that arise in nature, such as soap films, knots and the shapes of fluid droplets. Kusner agrees with physicist and lead author Ivan Smalyukh of UC Boulder that their collaboration is the first to show in experiments that some of the most fundamental topological theorems hold up in real materials. Their findings appear in the current early online issue of Nature.

UMass Amherst's Kusner explains, "There are two important aspects of this work. First, the experimental work by the Colorado team, who fabricated topologically complex micro-materials allowing controlled experiments of three-dimensional liquid crystals. Second, the theoretical work performed by us mathematicians and theoretical physicists while visiting the University of California Santa Barbara's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP). We provided the geometric and topological analysis of these experiments, to explain the observed patterns and predict what patterns should be seen when experimental conditions are changed."

Kusner was the lone mathematician among four organizers of last summer's workshop on "Knotted Fields" at KITP, which led to this work. The workshop engaged about a dozen other mathematicians and about twice as many theoretical and experimental physicists in a month-long investigation of the interplay between low-dimensional topology and what physicists call "soft matter."

In their experiments, the physicists at UC Boulder showed that tiny topological particles injected into a liquid crystal medium behave in a manner consistent with established theorems in geometry and topology, Kusner says. The researchers say they have thus identified approaches for building new materials using topology.

UC Boulder's Smalyukh and colleagues set up the experiment by first creating colloids, solutions in which tiny particles are dispersed but not dissolved in a host medium, such as milk, paint and shaving cream. Specifically, they injected tiny, different-shaped particles into a liquid crystal, which behaves something like a liquid and a solid. Once injected into a liquid crystal, the particles behaved as predicted by topology.

Smalyukh says, "Our study shows that interaction between particles and molecular alignment in liquid crystals follows the predictions of topological theorems, making it possible to use these theorems in designing new composite materials with unique properties that cannot be encountered in nature or synthesized by chemists. These findings lay the groundwork for new applications in experimental studies of low-dimensional topology, with important potential ramifications for many branches of science and technology."

For example, he adds, these topological liquid crystal colloids could be used to upgrade current liquid crystal displays like those used in laptops and television screens, to allow them to interact with light in new, more energy efficient ways.

Want to own Shamu? SeaWorld files for $100 million IPO

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Looks like Shamu may soon be making a splash in the stock market.

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. on Thursday filed for an initial public offering of stock that could raise $100 million.

That number is likely to change as the company's bankers gauge interest from investors.

Private equity firm Blackstone Group LP, which owns SeaWorld, will likely sell some of its stake in the deal, but will still own a majority of the voting power of the company's shares after the IPO, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Orlando, Fla., company, known for its water shows featuring orca whales, dolphins and other animals, did not list a date for the offering. It plans to use the "SEAS" symbol.

Frequency Tunes Out the Noise When Tuning In to Videos

One of the most irritating things about enjoying videos, movies, and TV shows online is the sheer number of places you must navigate to in order to get the content. Each of the major television networks has its own channel, some of which serve up some full episodes some of the time, while others just serve up teaser clips and ongoing snippets, like the opening monologues for "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."

needn barrister: culbertson aborigine: Speed reading apps for ...

I installed some speed reading apps and tested them. I?ve so far notices a few ?categories? or groups of equals:

  • One kind exists mostly from showing a text word by word in the middle of the screen. Showing each word a very short time and so you can read at a high wpm because you never need to move your eyes.
  • Another kind is merely a speed reading article disguised as app.
  • Another kind is no speed reading app but just a reading app with a fancy name.
  • Yet another kind is training in the form of news/actually.
  • And the last kind is a training app, not for your own stuff but purely for training.

I only tested them quickly and unions talked the non-interesting. But they aren?t quite what I?m looking for. Maybe I should write one myself for training and guided reading.

Wild Things
David Samuels ? Harper?s

Animal nature, human racism, and the future of zoos.

?At the zoo?s outdoor cafeteria, individual food items are advertised with the faces of animals whose habitats have been endangered by the mass consumption of junk food: the ring-tailed lemur advertises the specific kinds of wide-eyed insanity incarnated in the Madagascar Swurve, a slushy drink that reminds me of the cold cherry-flavored syrup I used to suck from soggy white paper cups of Italian ices in the summertime. A skewer of marshmallows costs $2.50. One more dollar and you get two graham crackers from a crinkly supermarket package along with three squares of a Hershey?s bar that is approximately the size of an elephant?s footprint. Then you take the skewers and hold them over open flames to make s?mores.

?Near the fire pits, a fat mom is yelling at her kid for wasting food. ?You never, never, never waste food! Never!? she instructs, in a scary tone of voice that is guaranteed to echo in the head of her future young diabetic. The Hasidic parents behind her are engaged in an odd-looking ballet, wheeling rickshaw-like contraptions that can carry three or four kids at a time. Their older children walk alongside the rickshaws in a parade of unseasonable black clothing that provides irrefutable evidence of the success of a communal experiment in rebuilding a human population that was systematically shot, gassed, and burned alive by their fellow humans. Below a footbridge, two slender gazelles butt heads, as a young boy standing alongside me unzips himself and sends a slender arc of golden urine into the illusory space of their enclosure.?

Vegetables are "blue" in Japanese and other observations on the uneasy relationship between color and language.

?In modern Japanese, midori is the word for green, as distinct from blue. This divorce of blue and green was not without its scars. There are clues that remain in the language, that bear witness to this awkward separation. For example, in many languages the word for vegetable is synonymous with green (sabzi in Urdu literally means green-ness, and in English we say ?eat your greens?). But in Japanese, vegetables are ao-mono, literally blue things. Green apples? They?re blue too. As are the first leaves of spring, if you go by their Japanese name. In English, the term green is sometimes used to describe a novice, someone inexperienced. In Japanese, they?re ao-kusai, literally they ?smell of blue?. It?s as if the borders that separate colors follow a slightly different route in Japan.

?And it?s not just Japanese. There are plenty of other languages that blur the lines between what we call blue and green. Many languages don?t distinguish between the two colors at all. In Vietnamese the Thai language, khiaw means green except if it refers to the sky or the sea, in which case it?s blue. The Korean word purueda could refer to either blue or green, and the same goes for the Chinese word q?ng.It?s not just East Asian languages either, this is something you see across language families. In fact, Radiolab had a fascinating recent episode on color where they talked about how there was no blue in the original Hebrew Bible, nor in all of Homer?s Illiad or Odyssey!?

Never Let Go
[Part 1 ? Part 2 ? Part 3]
Kelley Benham ? Tampa Bay Times

A three-part series on being the parent of a micro-preemie.

?Suddenly there was blood. Blood on my hands. Blood on a thin cotton hospital gown. Blood in red rivulets and blood in dark clumps. Bright beads of blood on the doctor's blue latex gloves. Blood in such startling quantity we could only imagine there was no life, no baby, not anymore.

?My obstetrician looked stricken that day in March 2011 when he rushed into a triage room at Bayfront Medical Center. I clenched and vomited as he explained that our baby had no chance of surviving outside the womb ? if she wasn't already gone. A tech tried for long minutes to summon a heartbeat on the monitor, searching every quadrant of my abdomen. I don't remember if we held our breath or gasped or spoke or sobbed. I remember only the frozen shock when a heartbeat flooded the room, a sound like a galloping horse.

?In just a few hours, our baby had been lost and then found. On the monitor, she bobbed and floated in a pixelated haze. But next to her loomed a mysterious shape that had not been there two days before: a clot of blood the size of a fist, created as the placenta had begun to tear loose from my body. A nurse pumped drugs into an IV to stall the labor, and gradually they took a tenuous hold. But it was clear to everyone that the reprieve was temporary. My baby and I were coming apart.?

The Hazards of Growing Painlessly
Justin Heckert ? New York Times Magazine

Ashlyn Blocker, 13, has a ?congenital insensitivity to pain.?

?Tara and John weren?t completely comfortable leaving Ashlyn alone in the kitchen, but it was something they felt they had to do, a concession to her growing independence. They made a point of telling stories about how responsible she is, but every one came with a companion anecdote that was painful to hear. There was the time she burned the flesh off the palms of her hands when she was 2. John was using a pressure-washer in the driveway and left its motor running; in the moments that they took their eyes off her, Ashlyn walked over and put her hands on the muffler. When she lifted them up the skin was seared away. There was the one about the fire ants that swarmed her in the backyard, biting her over a hundred times while she looked at them and yelled: ?Bugs! Bugs!? There was the time she broke her ankle and ran around on it for two days before her parents realized something was wrong. They told these stories as casually as they talked about Tristen?s softball games or their son Dereck?s golf skills, but it was clear they were still struggling after all these years with how to keep Ashlyn safe.

?A couple of nights after telling me the story about putting her hand in the boiling water, Ashlyn sat in the kitchen, playing with the headband that held back her long brown hair. We had all been drawing on napkins and playing checkers and listening to Ashlyn and Tristen sing ?Call Me Maybe,? when all of a sudden Tara gasped and lifted the hair away from her daughter?s ears. She was bleeding beneath it. The headband had been cutting into her skin entire time we were sitting there.?

The Boy Who Played With Fusion
Tom Clynes ? Popular Science

A profile of Taylor Wilson, who achieved nuclear fusion at age 14.

?As the guide runs off to fetch the center?s director? You gotta see this kid!?Kenneth feels the weight coming down on him again. What he doesn?t understand just yet is that he will come to look back on these days as the uncomplicated ones, when his scary-smart son was into simple things, like rocket science.

?This is before Taylor would transform the family?s garage into a mysterious, glow-in-the-dark cache of rocks and metals and liquids with unimaginable powers. Before he would conceive, in a series of unlikely epiphanies, new ways to use neutrons to confront some of the biggest challenges of our time: cancer and nuclear terrorism. Before he would build a reactor that could hurl atoms together in a 500-million-degree plasma core?becoming, at 14, the youngest individual on Earth to achieve nuclear fusion.?

Police find clothing tied to missing yacht school friends

Clothing items believed to belong to two missing yacht school friends were found on the rocks of a small island off the coast of Maine, Kennebunkport police said today.

Zachary Wells, 21, and Prescott Wright, 23, were last seen hanging out at a home in the seaside community on Thursday, police chief Craig Sanford said.

The disappearance of the two friends baffled authorities, who have searched by air, water and in wooded areas for the men.

Today marked the first breakthrough in the case, when authorities discovered the clothing, including one item that was marked to indicate that it belonged to one of the men, Sanford said.

Wells and Wright are students at The Landing School in Arundel, Maine., where they were learning boat building and yacht design.

When the men failed to show up for classes on Thursday and Friday, administrators at the school contacted police.

Authorities found no signs of a disturbance at the home, Sanford said, and searches of the nearby area did not turn up any clues. Only one of the men owns a vehicle, and it remained parked in the driveway of the house.

"There's no one area to pinpoint because we don't know where they might have gone," Sanford said, calling it one of the strangest cases he has ever seen.

Both men were expected to head to their home states for the holidays.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kennebunkport Police Department at 207-967-2454.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) ? When U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo sponsored a 2010 bill to cut taxes on small beer brewers, he said he did so for pro-business, not pro-beer reasons.

A Mormon, the Idaho Republican told The Associated Press at the time that he abstains from alcohol, and he pledged to have a root beer to celebrate if the bill passed.

Crapo's arrest early Sunday in a Washington, D.C., suburb on suspicion of drunken driving suggests a private life that departed from his public persona as a teetotaling member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. About a quarter of Idaho's population subscribes to the Mormon faith, which discourages members from using alcohol, as well as coffee, tea and tobacco.

Colleagues said Monday they were taken aback by word of Crapo's arrest. The three-term senator is accused of registering a 0.11 percent blood-alcohol level on a breath test after running a red light in Alexandria, Va., where the legal limit is 0.08.

State Sen. Brent Hill of Rexburg, who considers Crapo a friend, said his son called him with the news, and his reaction was: "You must be talking about somebody else."

Hill is the Idaho Senate's top Republican, a position Crapo held while he was a state lawmaker from 1988 to 1992. Like Crapo, Hill is a Mormon.

"Obviously, I think many of us are very disappointed," Hill told the AP. "As a citizen of the state of Idaho, we have a right to be disappointed, and as a member of his faith, I'm disappointed that a tenet of our faith didn't mean any more to him than evidently it did."

Crapo faces a court date Jan. 4.

Lindsay Nothern, a spokesman for the senator in Idaho, said Crapo would have no comment Monday. The lawmaker, who is married with five children, was spending the Christmas holiday with family, Nothern said.

In a statement Sunday, Crapo took responsibility and pledged to ensure "this circumstance is never repeated."

"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance," said Crapo, 61. "I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me."

The state's junior U.S. senator, Republican Jim Risch, also was "very surprised" by the news, spokesman Brad Hoaglun said.

But Hoaglun said Crapo, a cancer survivor whose public image previously was squeaky clean, should be able to count on Idaho residents' forgiveness and understanding during what's clearly a difficult time.

"As a friend and colleague, I offer my support and help to him in any way I can," Risch said in a statement. "Senator Crapo has worked hard on behalf of Idahoans for many years and I have full confidence that Senator Crapo will continue his dedicated and unselfish service to the people of Idaho."

Risch is Catholic.

Idaho's two U.S. representatives, Raul Labrador and Mike Simpson, are Mormons, though Simpson has been open with constituents and media about drinking and smoking cigarettes.

Neither Republican immediately responded to a request for comment.

Idaho politicians getting arrested for drunken driving is nothing new: Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter was arrested in the early 1990s, when he was lieutenant governor; Democratic state Sen. Edgar Malepeai of Pocatello was arrested for DUI in 2009; and former state Sen. John McGee, a Caldwell Republican, was arrested on Father's Day 2011 after driving drunk and taking a car that didn't belong to him.

But none of them were Mormon.

Crapo raised the stakes by projecting an image of a diligent member of the faith and ? at least outwardly ? following church founder Joseph Smith's 1833 revelation in which he advised members that "strong spirits are not for the belly."

The U.S. Senate adjourned last week and wasn't expected to resume until Wednesday; it's unclear why Crapo had remained in Washington, D.C., ahead of the Christmas holiday.

According to the police report, he was alone in his car. It wasn't immediately clear where he'd been or where he was going when he was stopped.

Crapo was a Mormon bishop at 31 and has showed no public signs of a break from his church's teachings.

Church members must follow its guidance ? including its rules on alcohol ? to participate fully in the faith's rituals, including temple activities that are central to the religion.

Phone calls Monday to Mormon headquarters in Salt Lake City were not returned.

Crapo, first elected in 1998, is expected to take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate's budget and finance panels and was a member of the so-called "Gang of Six" senators who worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal that was never adopted by Congress.

The 2010 bill he sponsored on cutting taxes for brewers ultimately stalled.

CONGRESS

The Hill's Kyle Balluck: " Ben Affleck will not run for Senate" Actor-director Ben Affleck will not run for the Senate in Massachusetts, he announced late Monday. "I love Massachusetts and our political process, but I am not running for office," Affleck wrote on his Facebook page. LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Alana Semuels: " Newark Mayor Cory Booker aims for higher office" The crowd in the Upper West Side bookstore practically cooed when the mayor of Newark, looking like the college football tight end he once was, strode into a book signing and gave the audience a bashful smile. Cory Booker, here because he wrote the forward to a book about homelessness, spent the next half-hour talking about his father's roots in poverty and the kindness of humankind, throwing in references to friends such as entertainer Tyler Perry and author Alice Walker, and, presumably because this is New York, using some Yiddish. LINK

GUN CONTROL

ABC News' George Stephanopoulos: "Asa Hutchinson: Gun Control Not Part of 'Ultimate Solution' to Gun Violence" Asa Hutchinson - the former congressman who will lead the effort by the NRA to place armed security guards in schools across the country following the Newtown, Conn. shooting that left 20 children and six adults dead - told me this morning on "This Week" that gun control efforts would not be part of the "ultimate solution" to gun violence. LINK

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " Court filings surge in FOIA cases during Obama years" A study has found that more federal court complaints were filed during the first term of the Obama administration to force the government to abide by the Freedom of Information Act than were filed against the administration of President George W. Bush in his second term. The Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University said the FOIA filings in the last two years of Mr. Bush's second term and the last two years of Mr. Obama's first term showed a jump of 28 percent - from 562 to 720. LINK

FISCAL CLIFF

The Wall Street Journal's Staff: " Cliff Negotiations Take Holiday Break" Congressional leaders and the White House are taking a holiday break in negotiations over how to avoid year-end spending cuts and tax increases, and may not take up the issue in earnest again until just before New Year's Eve. LINK

The Washington Post's Lisa Rein: "Federal workers feel unease over potential layoffs, furloughs unleashed by 'fiscal cliff'" Federal employees have been skeptical for months that the biggest cuts to government spending in history could really happen. But with the "fiscal cliff" a week away, workers are now growing increasingly alarmed that their jobs and their missions could be on the line. LINK

GOP

Politico's Kevin Robillard: "Republicans Fearful of 2013? Nearly three-quarters of Republicans are fearful about their own lives in 2013 - a huge jump of over 50 percent since 2006, according to a poll released Monday. LINK

DEBT

The New York Times' Annie Lowrey: "A Campaign on U.S. Debt Gains Steam" Maya MacGuineas has been ringing alarms about the nation's growing debt for 15 years, imagining a day when a president and a Congress might finally work together to curb deficit spending. After watching President Obama and Speaker John A. Boehner once again come close to agreeing on a plan, only to see a deal slip away, she is troubled but undeterred. LINK

Kahakai Kitchen: Cheezy Broccoli Soup: Vegan-Style Comfort Food ...

The craving hit for broccoli-cheese soup and I wanted one without the dairy and the calories and fat it brings. Originally I was going to make my favorite go-to vegan cheese sauce from Chloe's Kitchen by Chloe Coscarelli and stir it into a creamy broccoli soup, but when I went to look it up, I found she had a recipe for Cheesy Broccoli Soup in Sourdough Bread Bowls. Since it was easier and faster than making a separate sauce, I gave it a try--adding a red bell pepper for some holiday color. I didn't have bread bowls but served with some hunks of baguette, it was a satisfying dinner.? My changes are in red below.

Chloe says, "This soup has a smooth cheesy base with hearty chunks of tender broccoli. I always turn to this soup when I am in need of a cozy comfort food. This dish is perfect for rainy day blues."

Cheezy Broccoli Soup
Adapted From Chloe's Kitchen, Chloe Coscarelli
(Serves 6)

2 Tbsp olive oil (I used 1 Tbsp)
1 onion, chopped
(I added 1 red bell pepper, chopped)
sea salt
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups vegetable broth (I used low-sodium)
2 cups soy, almond or rice milk (I used an unsweetened almond-coconut blend)
1 bunch broccoli, florets cut, stems trimmed, peeled and chopped
3/4 cup nutritional yeast flakes
2 tsp lemon juice
freshly ground black pepper
?
In a large soup pot, heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium-high heat, and saute onion and red pepper until soft. Season generously with salt, add garlic and let cook a few more minutes.

Add broth, non-dairy milk, and broccoli. Bring to a simmer, cover, reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer for 20 minutes until broccoli is tender.

Spoon out a small amount of broccoli florets and red pepper pieces and reserve. In batches, transfer the remaining soup to a blender and puree. Return pureed soup to the pot and add the reserved broccoli florets and red pepper. Over low heat, stir in nutritional yeast until incorporated. Add lemon juice and season to taste with salt and black pepper. Mix well.

Ladle into bowls and garnish with additional red pepper if desired. Enjoy!

Notes/Results: I love a soup that tastes decadent but really is a healthy choice. This one has that creamy, cheesy taste and texture but is low-fat and cholesterol free. The nutritional yeast adds vitamins--along with the red pepper and broccoli. It's not quite the gooey, cheese-filled bowl you may have had but it makes a great substitution, totally filling the craving. I would make this again.?
Just a couple of friends visiting the Souper Sundays kitchen this week with one soup and one salad to share--let's take a look.
Pam from Sidewalk Shoes made Rich Barley Beef Soup and says, "One of my favorite combinations for soup is beef and barley, so when I saw Rich Beef Barley Soup in Barefoot Contessa, How Easy Is That?: Fabulous Recipes & Easy TipsI knew I wanted to try it.? I was intrigued by the two cups of leeks, that seemed like a lot, and I don?t recall making a version like that.It was yummy!? Unfortunately I couldn?t find oxtails, so I used a chuck with some bone.? And again, I just tossed everything in the slow cooker, except for the barley, and set it on low for 8 hours.? I cooked the barley separate and added it to the soup about 30 minutes before serving."?

Janet of The Taste Space made this green and gorgeous Herby Peanutty Noodly Salad and says, "Herby, peanutty noodly salad. I couldn?t even make up a name as fun as this (Rob probably could but he didn?t). Pick your favourite herbs and toss them in this lime-spiked dressing. Coat noodles of your choice and add in some green vegetables like snow peas, snap peas or even broccoli. Toss with some (toasted) peanuts for some crunch and fats. Not as decadent as the meals this weekend, but I am ok with that."

Many thanks to Pam and Janet for joining in this week. If you have a soup, salad, or sandwich that you would like to share, just click on the Souper Sundays logo for all of the details.?

Have a happy healthy holiday week!?

The Tech Writing Prof: Things that Technical Writers Need to Provide ...

A recent discussion on the Technical Writer group at LinkedIn asked how to explain to a client that a technical writer need not be an expert in the subject matter of the manuals. As technical writers, we have to be learners, but we usually do not begin as experts in the scientific topics we cover. However, we must be:
  • Experts in Document Design
  • Although technical writers do not need to be experts in semiology, psychoanalysis, or content analysis, we need to know enough about document design to create manuals, web sites, brochures, and other communication packages that speak to the audience. We need to know enough about the audience's eye movement across the page to make a page that flows. That is, for English speaking audiences, we need to know that the audience's eye will track from the upper left to the lower right of the page. For audiences who primarily read Chinese, Hebrew, or Arabic, those eyes will track in different directions.

Additionally, we need to be aware of the limitations of the fonts we incorporate (Are the lines so thick that they are hard to read from a distance?), the mix of colors we use (Can the elements of our pictures be distinguished as separate elements?), and the amount of white space incorporated in our illustrations and text. Although Jan White claims that serifs have a functional value in that they direct the eye and san serif fonts anchor the eye (Kostelnick and Roberts, 1998, p142), there have not been corroborating studies confirming these findings. Therefore, other than my own anecdotal evidence in support of White's study, I really cannot recommend this limitation on use of fonts. However, I can point to more than a few sources that would confirm that using more than two or three fonts on a page will reduce the readability of the page (Becker, 2009)(Krug, 2006, p36).

As mentioned previously, we also need to consider the cultural side of our pages and illustrations. Do procedural photos that are directed at Americans include someone pointing to the audience with the middle finger? Does a photo for an Arabian audience show the sole of a model's foot?
