How long should you date a person before you agree to marry them?
In the world of dating 1 year of dating is an eternity. If you?re still dating after a year it?s serious, and if it?s that serious then marriage is the next natural step right? But after a few years of marriage many husbands and wives find out they really have no idea who the hell they?re married to. How fortunate would we all be if we were able to take the advice of those who know from experience and take our time to get to know our boyfriend or girlfriend better before we jump into marriage?
In the world of dating a year might be a long time but in the reality of life a year of dating is not enough to know who the person you?re dating really is and what they will be like to live with as husband or wife. Then again, you really can?t ever know that unless you try living with the person for a few years before you marry them, and even then, when we know we have something to lose we?re more careful what aspects of our true selves we show. People can go living together for years, unmarried, and stay on their guard the whole time then transform suddenly into someone their mate doesn?t recognize as soon as there?s a marriage certificate to give them that feeling of security they didn?t have before the marriage. When they have that paper to assure them you won?t leave, they no longer have any need to be careful of the things they say and do.
So I guess at the end of the day it doesn?t really matter if you get married 1 year after you?ve been dating someone or 3 years after you?ve been living with them. You probably don?t have better or worse odds of your marriage succeeding one way or another. Your marriage will succeed or fail not based on the circumstances leading up to it but on what you do during the marriage.
