A couple months ago we shared our recipe for one of our all time favorite things, Iced Coffee. We?ve been making iced coffee using the cold brew method for about three years now. But we also love us some Starbucks! We are frequent visitors to the Bucks, and in the summertime our drink of choice there is iced coffee with milk. We have never really compared the cost or nutrition difference between our homemade iced coffee and Starbucks iced coffee. So we thought it would be perfect for this week?s Food Face-Off Friday:
Homemade Iced Coffee (with skim milk)
Cost: $1.75 (estimated)
Nutrition: Serving size 16oz:?Calories 80,?Total Fat 0g, Sugars 12g
Taste: Smooth, creamy, almost a chocolate taste
Starbucks Iced Coffee (with skim milk)
Cost: $2.49 for Grande (16oz)
Nutrition: Serving size 16oz:?Calories 110,?Total Fat 0g, Sugars 24g
Taste: Strong coffee flavor, slightly bitter
Cost Breakdown: This one is tricky to figure out. For us, the homemade iced coffee is about $0.75 less than Starbucks. That is with buying coffee at $6.00/pound and milk at $2.50. If the coffee or milk you buy are more or less expensive, obviously that number will be different. So this one varies from person to person, but for us there is a clear winner.
Cost Winner: Homemade Iced Coffee
Nutrition Breakdown: There?s not much difference here, but every calorie counts! One thing to note is that the calories in the Starbucks iced coffee come mostly from the sweetener. The calories in the homemade iced coffee come mostly from skim milk. We?re not huge fans of drinking your calories but if you?re going to, then it might as well be from something healthy like skim milk. If you can drink Starbucks without the sweetener, go for it! It would slash the amount of calories you would consume.
Nutrition Winner: Homemade Iced Coffee
Taste Breakdown: We would both choose the homemade version every time. Because of the cold brewed method it?s so smooth and not really bitter. Neither of us really need to put much sweetener in it at all. A grande Starbucks iced coffee, if sweetened, comes with 4 pumps of their classic syrup. I asked for half of?that last time I got my iced coffee and it was still good, but a little too bitter for me. Homemade iced coffee is mostly milk with a little coffee concentrate, so it?s creamy -?almost like drinking a latte. Iced coffee from Starbucks is mostly coffee with a little bit of milk, so it?s thinner and not as creamy.
Taste Winner: Homemade Iced Coffee
Overall Winner: Homemade Iced Coffee
So there you have it! We do still stop at Starbucks frequently enough to be Gold Card members, so we?re no strangers! We?re huge fans! It is great when we are headed out on a road trip or getting groceries at Target, But for us, the winner is our homemade iced coffee. It tastes the way we want our iced coffee to taste.
