U.S. Home Supply Tumbles To Low Not Seen Since 2005, Pointing To Recovery

* Home sales rise 5 pct to 11-month high
* Supply of homes on the market lowest since 2005
* Prices fall 2.5 pct from year-ago
WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Sales of previously owned U.S. homes rose to an 11-month high in December and the supply of properties on the market tumbled to a near 7-year low, pointing to a nascent recovery in the housing market.
The National Association of Realtors said on Friday existing home sales increased 5 percent month over month to an annual rate of 4.61 million units.
November's sales pace was revised down to a 4.39 million-unit pace, previously reported as a 4.42 million-unit rate.
Economists polled by Reuters had expected sales to rise to a 4.65 million-unit sales pace. Sales in December were up 3.6 percent from a year ago. A total of 4.26 million homes were sold in 2011, up 1.7 percent from the prior year.
"A sector of the economy that has been a large weight on growth has started to stabilize over the last few months and we will continue to look for momentum in 2012," said John Doyle, currency strategist at Tempus Consulting in Washington.
The third straight month of gains in sales added to hopes that a tentative recovery in the housing market was starting to take shape, but progress will be painfully slow given a glut of unsold properties that is weighing down on prices.
Data this week showed single-family home starts rose for a third straight month in December and optimism among builders this month was the highest in four-and-a-half years.
But the sector, responsible for the 2007-09 recession, remains challenged by an oversupply of homes amid an 8.5 percent unemployment rate. In addition, declining prices have left many Americans with homes that are worth less than their mortgages.
But there are tentative signs of improvement. There were 2.38 million unsold homes on the market last month, the fewest since March 2005. That represented a 6.2 months' supply at December's sales pace, the lowest since April 2006, and compared to 7.2 months' supply in November.
However, the inventory of unsold homes tends to decline in winter. A supply of 6 months is generally considered as ideal and anything above indicates further declines in house prices. The median sales price fell 2.5 percent to $164,500 from a year ago.
Sales last month rose across all four regions, with gains in both the multifamily home and single-family home segments.
Single family home sales rose 4.6 percent, while multi-family dwellings advanced 8.7 percent.
But the road to recovery will be bumpy. Distressed properties, foreclosures and short sales which typically occur at deep discounts, accounted for 32 percent of overall sales last month, little changed from November.
A third of pending existing home sales contracts were canceled, the NAR said. (Reporting by Lucia Mutikani)

How protein in teardrops annihilates harmful bacteria: Novel technology reveals lysozymes have jaws

ScienceDaily (Jan. 19, 2012) ? A disease-fighting protein in our teardrops has been tethered to a tiny transistor, enabling UC Irvine scientists to discover exactly how it destroys dangerous bacteria. The research could prove critical to long-term work aimed at diagnosing cancers and other illnesses in their very early stages.

Ever since Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming found that human tears contain antiseptic proteins called lysozymes about a century ago, scientists have tried to solve the mystery of how they could relentlessly wipe out far larger bacteria. It turns out that lysozymes have jaws that latch on and chomp through rows of cell walls like someone hungrily devouring an ear of corn, according to findings that will be published Jan. 20 in the journal Science.

"Those jaws chew apart the walls of the bacteria that are trying to get into your eyes and infect them," said molecular biologist and chemistry professor Gregory Weiss, who co-led the project with associate professor of physics & astronomy Philip Collins.

The researchers decoded the protein's behavior by building one of the world's smallest transistors -- 25 times smaller than similar circuitry in laptop computers or smartphones. Individual lysozymes were glued to the live wire, and their eating activities were monitored.

"Our circuits are molecule-sized microphones," Collins said. "It's just like a stethoscope listening to your heart, except we're listening to a single molecule of protein."

It took years for the UCI scientists to assemble the transistor and attach single-molecule teardrop proteins. The scientists hope the same novel technology can be used to detect cancerous molecules. It could take a decade to figure out but would be well worth it, said Weiss, who lost his father to lung cancer.

"If we can detect single molecules associated with cancer, then that means we'd be able to detect it very, very early," Weiss said. "That would be very exciting, because we know that if we treat cancer early, it will be much more successful, patients will be cured much faster, and costs will be much less."

The project was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the National Science Foundation. Co-authors of the Science paper are Yongki Choi, Issa Moody, Patrick Sims, Steven Hunt, Brad Corso and Israel Perez.

YBUY allows impulse tech buyers to wonder, 'Why not?'

It's always helpful when tech start-ups scheme new ways for you to burn through that bank account. Like YBUY, the membership-only site that charges a monthly fee in exchange for trying out the latest and greatest in gadgetry, like an iPad 2 or Xbox 360, sans shipping fees. The fresh-out-of-beta portal offers approved users the ability to return or purchase the pre-selected goods after a 30 day trial period, with that recurring charge going towards the full retail price if you choose to opt-in. Its co-founders claim to curate the ever-changing roster of high-end kit, taking into account the best product reviews (ahem) and even featuring certified refurbs. So, what's the catch? Well, there doesn't really appear to be any. It's simply up to you to curb that tech enthusiasm and keep your credit card balance resting peacefully at zero.

NASA's Newest Telescope Survives Funding Battle, But Challenges Remain (SPACE.com)

AUSTIN, Texas ? NASA's ambitious next generation space observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, has become known more for running way over budget than for the exciting and potentially groundbreaking discoveries it could make. But, with funding now secured for the 2012 fiscal year, it is time to prove the naysayers wrong, project team members say.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is being billed as the successor to the prolific Hubble Space Telescope, but cost overruns have plagued the project, particularly in recent years.

On Nov. 18, 2011, President Barack Obama signed into law a measure to grant NASA $17.8 billion for the 2012 fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1. This figure includes an increase in funding, at $529.6 million, for JWST. This comes after House appropriators recommended canceling the over-budget telescope in the summer.

The observatory, which is slated to launch in 2018, is now expected to cost $8.8 billion. But with funding now secure for the current fiscal year, scientists and engineers are moving ahead with the design and construction of the telescope's components and main science instruments. [Photos: Building the James Webb Space Telescope]

"The re-plan effort to put JWST on a more sound schedule and budgetary basis began in earnest last year in the winter," Eric Smith, JWST deputy program director at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., said Jan. 9 at a JWST town hall-style forum here at the 219th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

"What was being done to change the program ? to give people confidence that this time we got it right ? it all culminated when NASA got its budget passed," Smith said. "The budget that we received in 2012 was the budget that was needed for the re-plan."

The team is now focused on meeting the next milestones, which include the construction, test and delivery of several flight instruments, Smith said.

And despite the project's budgetary woes, significant progress was made during 2011, said Scott Willoughby, JWST program manager at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, which is on contract to design and develop the observatory.

All 18 primary mirror segments have been coated and polished to enable the telescope to probe the early universe and examine the most distant galaxies.

"All 18 mirror segments have now completed their testing, which is impressive," Willoughby told SPACE.com. "It's taken years to polish them and go through the testing cycle twice."

The mirrors completed two rounds of cryogenic tests, at temperatures around minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit, similar to what the telescope would experience as it orbits 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth.

"One of the main things that we finished this year, technically, was the completion of the mirrors," Smith said. "This is a tremendous success story. About a decade early on, the top risk we always carried in the project was the ability to produce mirrors with optical quality this good. Well, they are done. This is a very big milestone."

Work is also under way on the telescope's tennis court-size sunshield and infrared instruments, officials said. And while November's funding bill represented a small victory, the JWST has their work cut out for them this year, Smith said.

"The challenge this year is to more or less walk the walk," he said. "We spent the last year convincing folks that we have a plan. They've placed a tremendous amount of faith in us by giving us the budget we asked for, so now we have to perform to keep things on schedule."
